So, by the time Aldrich had started working on this project, he had already made a fan base for himself and directed films of various genres. However, when the director came across Whatever Happened to Baby Jane novel, he was shaken to his core.

Aldrich was absolutely captivated by the story, and as soon as he finished reading the novel, he contacted Henry Farrell. Apparently, the director was able to convince the novelist to give the filming rights.

Several months later, Aldrich assembled a skilled team and then began working on the premise of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Famous screenwriter Frank Heller later joined this project and helped in developing the script.

So, after the preliminary stage of production was finished, Aldrich and a select few members of his team started looking for ideal filming locations in America. Since the basic premise of this film is set in California, the director thought it would be best to shoot in and around the same state.

After a couple of weeks, the production members were able to identify a number of potential shooting spots. Aldrich checked the locations in person and then instructed his crew to commence filming.

The principal photography of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane began in the fourth week of July 1962 and was completed by the second week of September. The shooting schedule lasted for nearly two months, during which a number of outdoor shots were captured around L.A.

In fact, most of the outdoor shots of this film were captured in and around Los Angeles County, except a few scenes which were filmed in Malibu.

After the shooting process was over, Aldrich and his team began working on the promotion of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, as they had to release the movie in the same year.
