A Million Ways to Die in the West, performed decently at the box office earning over $80 million in the worldwide collection. But this unorthodox film failed to amuse a large number of critics and audiences for the lack of cohesion in the story. Despite the fact that the opening sequences were set to be filmed at a different place, the production first arrived in the state of Colorado. The sequence in the movie featuring the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad was actually filmed in Antonito. This town located in Conejos County is often visited by tourists for its idyllic backdrop. The production unit, however, only filmed the above-mentioned sequence, and then moved to the next location.

Arizona | USA

The opening scene of the film was shot in Arizona. The production unit extensively captured the exterior shots of the Oljato-Monument Valley. And used it as the backdrop for several scenes in the film. Other exterior shots of Navajo County were taken as well. Filming lasted for about a week and a half before the crew arrived in New Mexico to shoot the remaining scenes.

New Mexico | USA

Santa Fe County, sitting on the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range, was the prime filming location. The scenes featuring the town of Old Stump in the film were actually constructed by the crew. The Santa Fe Studios, housing numerous well-equipped sound stages, was used. The filming crew captured most of the interior sequences inside this studio. However, the scene of the duel was filmed in Sandoval County. Specifically, the sparsely populated region of Jemez Pueblo is where the unit had to set up camps, to capture the final sequence of the film.

Midway through the film, Louise’s current boyfriend, Foy, challenges Albert to a gunfight at the town square. But before he could appear for the fight, he gets drugged by Anna, the night before. However, all this while Anna refrained from telling Albert that she is, in fact, married to an outlaw.

In the final quarter of the movie, Clinch Leatherwood (parody of Clint Eastwood), a ferocious outlaw, decides to visit the town of Old Stump. After learning about the growing infatuation and misdemeanour of his wife, Anna. Albert, scarily runs away at first, when he is confronted by Clinch. But the lead actor later musters up the courage to face him.

Eventually, Albert is shown to shoot Clinch with a venomous bullet which kills him. The credits roll, as Louise attempts to return back to Albert, but gets readily turned down. Albert and Anna get into a romantic relationship and buy more sheep for their farm.
