The story of American Born Chinese is set in the beautiful state of California. Yet, at the beginning of this project, Kelvin Yu wanted to shoot somewhere else. According to Gene’s graphic novel of the same name, the main character lives in the city of Los Angeles, California.
But when Kelvin Yu came up with the idea for this project, he initially thought of changing the story a bit. The creator wanted to set the story in the city of New York, as Chinatown in New York is pretty popular and could potentially be used to capture the sequences of the lead actors’ home.
In fact, a couple of production members even started scouting in and around the city of New York, trying to find the best filming location for this show. However, this decision was later changed due to the unavailability of desirable filming locations.
Plus, the screenplay writers and other creative heads of the show advised Kelvin Yu not to change the story completely. So, later on Kelvin asked the production members to start looking for suitable filming locations within the state of California.
Within a couple of weeks, the production members came up with ideal filming locations in Los Angeles. However, Kelvin asked the filming crew to look for other shooting locations as well. Thus, another team started looking for additional shooting locations in California.
Finally, after all filming locations were scouted and selected, the creator asked the crew to start filming. The principal photography of this fantasy drama series began in the first week of July 2022.
The shooting process continued for several months, and the majority of the outdoor shots were captured in and around the iconic city of Los Angeles. A number of shots were captured near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Griffith Park.

After all these scenes were shot, the production members moved to the city of Altadena. The remaining scenes of the show, including the interior scenes, were then filmed in this beautiful city in California.
