Where Was Asteroid City Filmed? Let’s Know This Sci-Fi Comedy Flick Closely!

The story of Asteroid City is set in and around the desert of Arizona. But interestingly enough, not all outdoor sequences of the movie were filmed in Arizona. In fact, the majority of the sequences of this comedy film were shot elsewhere.

Wes Anderson has been working on this project since November 2020. During the initial days of production, Anderson was busy convincing other producers to join this project. Steven Rales came on board shortly after, and Anderson started the audition process.

Tilda Swinton was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to join the cast of Asteroid City. Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Edward Norton were later selected by Anderson. As soon as the auditioning process was completed, Wes and his team began looking for suitable filming locations in America.

A distinct location near the Sonoran desert in Arizona was scouted by the production members. We visited the location in person and thought it would be ideal for shooting some Asteroid City outdoor sequences.

However, in order to capture the remaining sequences, Wes asked his team members to search for other locations. But unfortunately, none of the locations that the team scouted impressed Wes.

Eventually, the director decided to travel overseas in search of ideal locations which could depict the arid and rough background he was looking for. After searching for several weeks, Wes eventually found some ideal shooting locations in Spain and decided to film the remaining sequences of his film there.

The principal photography commenced in the first week of August 2021 and continued till the end of October of the same year. Important to mention that the majority of the outdoor sequences were filmed in and around the beautiful town of Chinchon, Spain.

While other sequences of this movie were captured in Arizona and Madrid, during the shooting, no issues kept the crew from filming. The shooting schedule remained the same till the final day of shooting.

Let us quickly take a closer look at where Asteroid City was filmed and find other intriguing details.

The film’s opening sequence, where we see the character of Midge, was actually filmed in Arizona. The production members used a medium-sized house to depict Campbell’s family home in Arizona.

Additional outdoor sequences in Arizona were captured around a sparsely populated location situated near the Sonoran desert. The shooting schedule in America was quite short, as Wes wanted to capture the majority of the outdoor scenes in Spain.

So, after these scenes were filmed, Wes, along with other members of the team, traveled overseas to Spain.

Spain

The second phase of shooting began in Spain. Wes and his crew arrived in the city of Madrid and captured a couple of outdoor shots depicting the background story of other supporting characters.

Then finally, the filming crew moved to Chinchon. This small Spanish town is located in the southeastern part of Madrid. Circled by a number of beautiful buildings with wooden balconies, this town is famous for its medieval architecture and hilltop houses.

The ending sequence of Asteroid City was filmed in this town, after which the crew returned to America and filmed the remaining interior scenes inside a studio.

So, are you planning to visit Spain in the upcoming days? Then I suggest you look up Museo Nacional del Prado, El Retiro Park, Royal Palace of Madrid, and Temple of Debod. The above-mentioned places are located in the capital of Spain.

The next time you visit Madrid, don’t forget to check out these iconic places as well.
