The making of Barbie went through a series of ups and downs. The high-ranked officials of Mattel wanted to collaborate with Universal Picture back in 2009 to make this film. Shortly after, the negotiations ended after the directors couldn’t reach agreeable terms with Universal.
A couple of years later, the officials of Mattel again arranged a special meeting with the heads of Sony Pictures Studio to discuss the making of this film. As per reports, Amy Schumer was selected to play the lead role.
But this time around, too, before the shooting could commence, the heads of Mattel decided to back out from the project for undisclosed reasons. Finally, by the end of 2019, Heyday Films collaborated with Warner Bros Pictures and reached a final agreement with Mattel.
The casting members of Barbie were then selected by Greta and her team. A few weeks later, the production members started searching for ideal shooting locations in America. However, a separate team was also sent to England to scout other suitable filming locations.
Eventually, the makers of Barbie decided to shoot the sequences of this movie in two separate phases. The first part of the movie was filmed in and around London and Leavesden. Whereas the second phase of the shooting took place in the state of California
The principal photography commenced in England last year, around the second week of March. Shooting continued at the same place for two and a half months, after which the filming crew returned to America and shot the second part.

After the production members completed the shooting of these sequences with the help of advanced shooting techniques, they arrived in London. Some outdoor scenes were filmed near the iconic London Bridge and London Eye.
These sequences were mainly used for the first part of the movie, The second part of Barbie, however, was entirely shot in America.

The second phase of filming began in June last year. The production members filmed the remaining outdoor shots of the movie in and around Venice Beach, Los Angeles. In fact, the sequences that you see in the film’s trailer, depicting the beach’s chill scenes, were in reality filmed near Venice Beach.
Additional outdoor scenes of the movie were captured in and around the beautiful region of Venice. The production members then wrapped the entire shooting process by the end of July 2022.
