The story of The Notebook is set in the small town of Seabrook, however, the filming didn’t take place in Texas. After the makers successfully acquired the shooting rights, the crew was asked to scout for filming locations in and around the state of South Carolina.

Soon, various potential shooting locations were scouted. The director visited the scouted locations in person and decided to shoot the majority of the sequences in South Carolina. Although, important to mention that a few minor sequences of the movie were filmed in the state of California.

The principal photography began in the first week of November 2002 and continued till the end of February 2003. The filming schedule initially got delayed due to frequent snow storms, however, the crew managed to capture the scenes after the weather was clear.

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the character of Noah during his younger days, was actually filmed in the city of South Carolina. 

The production members contacted the owner of a small vintage-styled home located on the outskirts of Charleston. The interior sequences of Noah’s family home were then filmed. However, the production members had to completely turn around the overall look of the house, before capturing the exterior shots of it.

Other pivotal sequences in South Carolina were captured in Cypress Garden. The iconic boat riding scene of the movie was actually filmed near this garden, which is located at 3030 Cypress Garden Rd, Moncks Corner. The production members had to mount high-lensed cameras on the boat, before capturing this outdoor sequence. 

Some other sequences of the movie were captured at the College of Charleston and Mount Pleasant, after which the production members moved to the next filming location.

California | USA

After completing the majority of the filming in South Carolina, the production members moved to California. The ending sequence of the movie was captured in Los Angeles. The famous beach sequence of the movie, where we see the two lead characters reminiscing about their past life, was also filmed in L.A.

Filming in California lasted till the end of February 2003, the filming crew then began working on the promotion of the film.
