The story of Book Club is set in California. In fact, the main sequences of this movie were shot in the same state. Apart from directing this film, Bill Holderman also wrote the screenplay for this project. 

So, before selecting the filming location, the director and Erin Simms collaborated and spent most of their time in making the story more interesting for the audience. Simms was all in for including inappropriate and cheap jokes in the film. However, the director opposed this idea and asked Simms to exclude over-the-top jokes, which were straight-up vulgar and crass. So, in order to find the subtle balance between vulgar and witty jokes, the director and Erin Simms worked pretty hard.

After the script was adjusted according to the director, he started looking for ideal filming locations. Holderman and a couple of other members of his team visited various locations in California and checked them closely to find a perfect match.

It’s important to mention that, even though the story is set and later filmed in California, the production members and the director struggled to acquire the shooting permits. But after several attempts, Holderman and his crew were able to get the filming permission.

The majority of the outdoor shots of Book Club were filmed in Santa Clarita, California. Whereas some pivotal scenes were also captured in and around Simi Valley and Arcadia.

The principal photography of Book Club began in June 2017 and continued for one and a half months. The production members also filmed the interior scenes of this movie inside a famous studio located in Los Angeles, California.

The opening scene of the film was shot in Arcadia. This beautiful city is located 13 northeast of downtown Los Angeles, on the foothills of San Gabriel Valley. The production members selected a medium-sized house to capture the outdoor scenes of Diane’s home.

In fact, the interior scenes of Diane’s home were also filmed inside the same property. Other important scenes in Arcadia were shot near Huntington Drive. The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of The Derby Restaurant to capture the sequences of Sharon and George’s first date.

This famous eatery is located at 233 East Huntington Drive, Arcadia. So before filming the interior scenes inside this iconic eatery, the restaurant was shut to the general public. Additional outdoor scenes of Book Club were filmed near Simi Valley. The production members selected a beautiful house located at Hummingbird Nest Ranch, located at 2940 Kuehner Dr, Simi Valley.

After all these shots were captured, the production members traveled to Los Angeles and filmed the fountain scene near Exposition Park.
