Where Was Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Filmed? Let’s Know This Musical Drama Film Closely!

Out of all the blockbuster movies made by Tim Burton, Charlie, and the Chocolate Factory was the first musical film that was directed by him. However, Burton had previously worked with Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands before selecting him for this project.

The past experience of working with Johnny helped Burton in many ways. The director didn’t hesitate in employing certain techniques, which could only be executed on screen by Depp.

A couple of years after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released, Burton went on to make other amazing musical dramas with Depp, such as Sweeney Todd, Dark Shadows, etc. But the success of these movies definitely came from the invaluable experience which Burton gained while making Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the first musical film of his career.

So during the initial stages of production, Burton arranged a special meeting with John August to discuss the screenplay. As per reports, even the lead actor was present in the same meeting and shared his point of view as well.

After all these tasks were completed, Burton and a certain few members of his team started looking for suitable filming locations. But, since the director wasn’t sure about the shooting sites in America, he decided to film in the UK.

Soon the production members contacted a leading film studio located in the United Kingdom and arranged a meeting with Burton. After agreeing on the final terms and conditions, the director asked the production members to commence shooting.

The principal photography of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory began in the third week of June 2004 and continued for 6 months in total. The shooting schedule of this project was quite long compared to other films directed by Burton.

Mainly because Tim refrained from using special effects and CGI for this project, the director asked the production members to build make-believe sets from scratch and used practical effects while shooting.

Apart from a few outdoor scenes, the majority of the film was shot inside a studio. The production members used several stages to capture the interior scenes of the movie, which we would further discuss in detail.

In other words, the majority of the interior scenes were shot inside a film studio in Iver Heath village, while the outdoor scenes were captured in Hertfordshire and Shepperton. None of the scenes were filmed outside of England.

After the shooting process was completed before the final week of December 2004, the production members returned to America and started working on the promotion of the film. Let us now take a closer look at where was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory filmed.

The opening scene of the film, where we see the character of Charlie and his grandfather for the first time, was filmed in Hertfordshire, England. Other pivotal scenes, such as the sequences depicting Veruca’s home, were also filmed around the same area.

The production members used a large mansion located at Wrotham Park, Hertfordshire, to capture the exterior shots of Veruca’s home. The interior shots of the house, however, were captured inside Hatfield House Armoury, located near Melon Ground, Hatfield Park.

All other scenes from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory were captured inside Pinewood Studios, located in the village of Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. The production members built make-believe sets on a number of sound stages, which were used to capture the majority of the scenes.

Iconic scenes of the Chocolate Room, Swiss Restaurant featuring the “Oompa Loompas,” and the Boutique Store were all captured inside Pinewood Studios, Iver Heath.
