Where Was CODA Filmed? Amazing Award-Winning Phenome!

At a distance of almost an hour from the main city of Boston is the small fishing town of Gloucester in Massachusetts. The town has a long history of fishing and other maritime activities. Gloucester holds a special reason as to why it was chosen to be in the movie.

Sian Heder wrote the movie and derived it from her own experiences of her childhood. When she was little, Sian would live in the nearby town of Cambridge and would often spend her summers in Gloucester. Her experiences of watching the local fishing community suffer from various issues, made her incorporate them into the movie!

Actual homes and locations around Gloucester were used for the filming of CODA. Some were chosen by the film’s production crew, while some were chosen specifically by Sian based on memories of her childhood. Another interesting detail is that while Ruby is shown to study at Gloucester High School, the scenes were filmed at Beverly High School in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Rockport, Massachusetts, USA

Another fishing town that was used for the filming of CODA was the nearby port town of Rockport. One cool scene from the movie is of a flooded quarry and that quarry is actually located in Rockport. While the quarry used to be functional once upon a time, now it serves as a community pool.

As Ruby prepares for her audition at the Berkey College of Music, a stand-in was used. Filming for her audition scene was done at The Rockport Music-Shalin Liu Performance Center. And if you’re in the region, you definitely should attend a concert there!
