Where Was Dunkirk Filmed? Let’s Know This Epic War Drama Film!

The story of this movie is set in and around the coastal city of Dunkirk, located in the northern region of France. However, other than a few important scenes which were shot in France, the majority of the scenes of this movie were actually filmed in and around America and England.

In fact, towards the final stage of filming, Nolan also decided to shoot a few scenes of Dunkirk in the Netherlands. Interestingly enough, this is the only war drama film which is directed by Nolan.

However, since the story of Dunkirk is actually inspired by real events, the director couldn’t alter major facts which are shown in the film.

So, after Nolan was done perfecting the screenplay, he began looking for suitable filming locations in France and England. Soon, the production members and Nolan visited the scouted locations in person and then made the final decision.

The principal photography of Dunkirk began in the final week of May 2016 and continued till the first week of September 2016. Considering the filming locations the production members had to cover, the shooting schedule was quite short.

Nolan and his team were able to complete the shooting process without facing many problems. However, while filming the outdoor scenes in the Netherlands, the filming crew ran into a major issue.

But thankfully, Nolan solved the problem after taking assistance from other creative heads of the unit. Alright, let us take a closer look at where Dunkirk was filmed.

England

The movie’s opening sequence, where we see the lead character outside of a railway station in England, was actually filmed in Dorset. The production members filmed the opening scene outside of Swanage Railway Station, located on the outskirts of Dorset.

Other important outdoor scenes in England were captured in and around Weymouth and Hampshire. The sequence where we see the model aircraft in the movie was filmed near Daedalus Airfield, Hampshire.

France

The sequences of the war shown in the movie were all filmed in France. In the movie’s second half, the outdoor scenes of Operation Dynamo were captured in and around Nord, France.

The scene where we see the French soldiers holding the street barricade in Dunkerque was captured near Rue Belle Rade. Other important outdoor scenes of the movie, such as the scene where we see the Allied forces running away from enemy fire, were filmed in Rue des Fusilles, France.

Other Filming Locations

After the outdoor shots of the movie were captured in England and France, the production members moved to the Netherlands. Additional scenes were shot in and around IJsselmeer and Flevoland.

The remaining interior shots of Dunkirk were filmed inside Warner Brothers Burbank Studios, located at 4000 Warner Boulevard, Burbank.

The filming process of Dunkirk ended by the second week of September 2016, after which the filming crew began working on the promotion of the movie.
