The story of GoldenEye is set in several different countries. However, the majority of the events take place in Russia and England. You’d be happy to know that the shooting of this film was also done in the same locations.

Since it was the first James Bond film for Martin Campbell, he wanted to give his best and entertain the audience to the best of his capabilities. So while choosing the filming locations, the director also came in and assisted the crew. The filming crew scouted the main filming locations in Russia, specifically in and around the city of St. Petersburg. At the same time, a separate team was sent to select the other shooting locations in London, France, and Puerto Rico.

But the shooting didn’t begin instantly after the main filming locations were selected. The filming crew had to arrange a wide variety of equipment and logistics. Moreover, the production members also had to take shooting permits from each country before locking the final shooting locations. By the third week of January 1995, the shooting process of GoldenEye began. The process continued for almost 6 months, and it was over before the end of June of the same year. The majority of the shooting budget was spent on getting expensive shooting equipment and booking iconic locations.

Whereas the majority of the time was spent traveling from one country to another. But, when the makers checked the result and the quality of the shots that came out in the end, they were more than satisfied. After all these sequences were captured, the crew shot the remaining scenes in England, France, and Puerto Rico in the last phase of filming. In fact, the interior scenes of this film were also filmed inside a studio in England.

Russia

The opening scene of the film, where we see a couple of Russian oligarchs and their henchmen talking about a secret space-based weapon, was filmed in Russia. The production members filmed this particular scene inside a posh hotel located in St. Petersburg.

Other important scenes in St. Petersburg were filmed near the Zoological Museum and Vasilevsky Island. Special shooting permission had to be taken before filming inside The Hermitage, which is located in the Tsentralny District, St. Petersburg.

Additional outdoor scenes were shot around this beautiful Russian city, after which the crew moved to the next shooting location.

Other Filming Locations

After the majority of the outdoor shots were filmed in Russia, the production members moved to France. Sequences depicting the lead actor following the trail of the villain and the oligarchs were filmed in and around France.

The sequence depicting James Bond’s car race with Xenia Onatopp was filmed near Alpes-Maritime, France. After that the production members captured other scenes in Puerto Rico and Switzerland and then moved to England to shoot the final quarter of the film.

Scenes depicting the headquarters of MI6 were filmed outside of SIS Headquarters located at 85 Albert Embankment, Vauxhall. A couple of other iconic scenes of GoldenEye were filmed in West Brompton and Westminster. 

Finally, the remaining interior scenes of GoldenEye were shot inside Warner Bros Studios, Leavesden. By the second week of June 1995, the entire shooting process of GoldenEye was over.
