If you’re looking for a super-entertaining action flick, then you’ve come to the right place. Follow this article, because today I’ll tell you everything about a similar film, Hidalgo starring Omar Sharif. Furthermore, I’ll also let you in on where was Hidalgo filmed.

Hidalgo is an awe-inspiring biographical film that was released back in the summer of 2004. This high-flying action flick is based on the life and works of an American jockey and his loving horse, Hidalgo.

Joe Johnston was at the helm of affairs for this project, while the screenplay was written by John Fusco. The basic premise of Hidalgo revolves around the character of Frank Hopkins and his racehorse. The plot thickens when the lead actor travels to Arabia with his horse to compete in a cross-desert challenge.

The commercial performance of Hidalgo wasn’t as impressive as the makers initially anticipated. This unique film only managed to surpass the production budget of $100 million by $8 million. Over the years, Hidalgo collected several prestigious nominations but only bagged one major award.

However, if you’re really excited to find out where Hidalgo filmed, read this article until the end.

Where Was Hidalgo Filmed? Let’s Know This Biographical Action Flick Closely!

Before Joe invested his time in the making of Hidalgo, he spent most of his time closely studying and researching the life and works of Frank Hopkins. As per reports, the director was so inspired by Hopkins’ adventurous life that he eventually decided to make a film based on it.

The director soon arranged a small yet efficient team and later convinced John Fusco to join the project as a screenplay writer. However, Joe still wasn’t sure about the ideal filming location for this movie, so he consulted other contemporary filmmakers.

Regarding the production budget, the director managed to arrange over $100 million for it, mainly because he chose to film in certain international locations. So, after Joe completed his meeting with other directors, he asked his team to scout filming locations in America.

Subsequently, a select few team members started looking for potential filming locations in and around Montana and South Dakota. While others searched for ideal shooting sites in California.

However, some portions of this movie were also captured in Morocco. The principal photography of Hidalgo began in the first week of August 2006 and continued for several months.

Other than the incident in Morocco, the production members didn’t face any noticeable issues during the shooting. While the filming crew was capturing the horse-chase scene in Morocco, one of the horses, which was being used for shooting, got badly injured.

This unfortunate incident delayed the shooting schedule for weeks and kept the crew from filming the outdoor sequences for the final quarter of the movie. After the shooting was completed by the end of November 2006, the production members returned to America and began working on the promotion.

Let us now discuss in detail where was Hidalgo filmed.

California | USA

The movie’s opening sequence, where we see the lead actor and his horse for the first time, was filmed in California. The production members selected an ideal filming location around Dumont Dunes to shoot this beautiful outdoor scene.

Other important sequences in California were captured in and around Cuddeback Dry Lake and Mystery Mesa. After these scenes were filmed, the production members traveled to Jamestown to film the railroad scene.

Additional outdoor sequences of the movie were filmed near Rancho Palos Verdes and Santa Maria Valley in California.

Other Filming Locations

Other pivotal scenes of the film depicting the inspiring back-story of the American jockey were captured around various locations in America. After the crew finished shooting in California, they moved to the beautiful state of Montana.

A number of outdoor shots were then captured around the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and Glacier National Park. Sequences from the final quarter of the movie were filmed in Morocco. However, the ending was captured in the state of Oklahoma, near the Blackjack Mountains.

Alright, friends, so that’s all about the filming locations of Hidalgo. As mentioned before, the shooting process was wrapped by the end of November 2006. Although after the crew completed filming the outdoor scenes, some more interior scenes were captured in Los Angeles.
