The production budget of Hunter Killer was high not because of the filming locations only. The decision to select top Hollywood A-listers for this project also bumped up the filming budget. Also, a large sum of money was also spent in acquiring the shooting rights from the author of Firing Point, published in 2008.

During the initial stage of productions in 2015, the director and other creative heads of this project, arranged a special meeting before choosing the final filming location. After several rounds of discussion, the makers decided to shoot the majority of the outdoor scenes in  Bulgaria instead of America.

The director mainly took this decision as he wanted to do something different and apply unconventional filming techniques for this project. Later, other creative heads suggested the director shoot some scenes in England as well.’

Donovan Marsh asked the filming crew to scout for ideal shooting locations in England. After a couple of locations were scouted, the director checked them in person and signaled the crew to commence the shooting process.

Even though Hunter Killer was released in the final quarter of 2018, the principal photography of this film began in 2016. The entire shooting process lasted for 3 months, however, due to a series of unfortunate events, the release date of this movie got delayed.

The majority of the outdoor shots were captured in Bulgaria, while the remaining shots were filmed in England. In fact, the interior shots of Hunter Killer were also filmed in Bulgaria inside a special film studio.

After these shots were captured, the production members moved to the next filming location. Other important scenes of Hunter Killer were filmed in the city of Sofia. The production members selected a number of beautiful shooting locations around this city to shoot the remaining outdoor scenes. 

The outdoor sequences where the American naval officers devise an ingenious plan to catch the extremist group were filmed inside a commercial building in Sofia. The production members had to change the entire look of the building to make it look like a safe and secure hiding place.

In fact, the interior scenes of Adropov’s submarine were filmed inside Nu Boyana Film Studios, Sofia. After all these shots were filmed, the production members moved to England.

The exterior shots of the USS Arkansas were captured inside Pinewood Studios, located in the village of Iver Heath. However, the interior scenes of the USS Arkansas were filmed inside a different studio.

The production members used Ealing Studios located in Ealing Green, England. By the final week of November 2016 the entire shooting process of Hunter Killer was over.
