It Follows, received a total of 43 nominations and went on to win 25 prestigious awards. Which included the Austin Fantastic Fest and Bram Stoker Awards in 2014 and the following year, respectively! Commercially, this unconventional film, performed decently as well. Collecting $23.4 million in box office revenue, against a production budget that was just north of $1 million!

The film begins by introducing us to the central character of Jay, a young American girl, who is shown to go on a movie date, with her new found love, Hugh. Later in the film, after making love in a car, Hugh suddenly knocks Jay unconscious, and ties her to a chair.

Soon after, Hugh is shown to run away from the place, after confessing that he had transferred a spirit unto the body of Jay, while they were having s*x. The following day, Jay is rescued by her neighbor, Grant and thereafter she explains the entire scenario to him.

A demonic creature, in human form, begins to haunt and follow Jay. She later discovers the true identity of Hugh, who’s real name was Jeff Redmond. And upon further prying Jay finds out that the only way she can get rid of the attached entity, was by transferring it to someone else, while having intercourse.

Eventually, the character of Paul, Jay’s long lost friend emerges, and offers to help. The female lead then decides to have s*x with him, to finally do away with the horrors and sightings. The credits roll, as Jay and Paul get down to their business. but later realize, the entity still follows them!

Where Was It Follows Filmed? Let’s Know This Atypical Horror Film Closely!!

Director David Robert Mitchell, was working on perfecting the script of It Follows, for three years, prior to the release of the film. The basic concept of the film is derived from David’s early childhood traumas and paranormal experiences. Soon after the script was ready, David arranged a meeting with other production heads, to discuss a suitable location for It Follows.

The production unit, after scouting for several locations, eventually decided to shoot the film, in and around the state of Michigan. The principal photography began towards the end of September 2013 and was completed in just one month. The short filming schedule was owed to the limited number of locations the crew had to film in. And also the level of efficiency the whole production unit was on.

Now without waiting any longer, let’s discuss where was It Follows filmed, in depth. And explore more about the exact shooting spots!

Detroit, Clawson | Michigan

The first location that the production team reached was the city of Detroit in Michigan. The opening scene of the film, where Jay is shown to go out on a movie date, was filmed in Redford Theater. In order to film inside the theater, the production had to book the venue for 3 days. Exterior shots of the movie theater’s parking lot were also taken.

Outdoor shots of the pool building were taken at Water Works Park. The century old monument was featured in the one of the scenes where Jay is shown to plan with her neighbor. However, the interior shot of the same sequence was filmed in Clawson High School. Located in the city of Clawson, which is about 17 miles from the city of Detroit. Meanwhile you can also watch these vengeful films, such as Barbarian, Deadpool and The Curse of Bridge Hollow which are equally intriguing.

Some other important scenes in the film featured the Packard Plant. Along with the University of Michigan, located at 4001 W. McNichols Road.

Northville. Berkley | Michigan

The crew then moved to the County of Oakland and Wayne. The small city of Northville is where the final quarter of the movie was filmed. Outdoor shots of the Northville Psychiatric Hospital were taken. Filming only lasted for 3-4 days at this location.

Finally the production moved to the city of Berkley, which is also located in Oakland county. And filmed the remaining portion of the movie. The ending sequence where Jay and Paul are shown to walk out of an ice-cream parlor, was filmed at Clark’s Ice Cream and Yogurt shop. The production unit booked the entire shop for 2 days.
