Principal photography of the horror thriller movie, Bird Box began in October 2017. The filming took place in multiple locations in the state of California. Some of the major scenes were shot in Humboldt and Del Norte County. Not to mention, movies like Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park: The Lost World were also shot here. 

However, the production team started scouting for a location in mid-2017 and somehow they ended up on the banks of the magnificent Smith River located in Del Norte County. The scenes where Sandra Bullock travels through the woods with her kids were filmed here. The river is perfect for rafting but is marked with powerful and dangerous rapids.  A few of the popular spots near the river are The Oregon Hole Gorge, the South Fork, and the Red Canyons of North Fork.

During the entire shooting process, nearby local eateries and restaurants, and guest houses kept their businesses open in order to accommodate a team of more than 351 people. In a way, the filming of the movie boosted the economy of the area.  

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park | California, United States Of America

On the banks of the Smith River, the vast park is situated 9 miles east of Crescent City. It is also home to 9,500 acres of redwood trees. The majority of the forest scenes in the movie were filmed in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. A handful of scenes were also shot at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Some of the scenes from the iconic movie Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi were filmed in this park.

Monrovia, Los Angeles | California, United States Of America

The Bird Box House in the movie is in reality situated on the corner of North Canyon Boulevard and East Greystone Avenue. After the filming of the movie the house became quite popular and people from all over Los Angeles came to visit it. This is the house where Malorie with her kids and few other characters come to hide from the suicide-inducing monsters.

However, the owner of the house, later on, confirmed that whoever came to visit the house to click pictures was really polite and asked for permission. Interestingly, some of them even brought their own blindfolds. A report revealed that Netflix paid an amount of $12,000 to the owner of the house to take exterior shots of the whole property.
