The premise of Modern Family is set around the beautiful state of California. Thus, in order to showcase some authentic places of California to the audience, the makers thought of shooting on location.

So, right from the get-go, Christopher and Steven started looking for potential filming locations in and around the state of California. Finally, before the shooting of the pilot season began in 2009, the makers decided to shoot in Los Angeles.

Important to mention that the ten other seasons of Modern Family, which followed in the later years, were also filmed across various locations in this Californian city. But unlike the first season which was in just 8 weeks, the other seasons took way longer to film.

The principal photography for the pilot season of Modern Family reportedly commenced in the summer of 2009 and continued for 8-9 weeks. During the course of filming the pilot season of the show, the production members didn’t face any major challenges.

However, while the production members were capturing the sequences of the remaining seasons, a commercial building company filed a lawsuit against the makers. This incident completely halted the shooting for several weeks. But, thankfully, after the matter was resolved, the filming crew resumed shooting.

A handful of incidents occurred from time to time during the course of shooting 11 seasons. But, none of them were complex enough to force the production members to finish the shooting in accordance with the filming schedule.

The opening sequence from the first season of the show, where we see the family home of Mitchell and Cameron, was actually filmed in L.A. The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of a posh mansion located at 2211 Fox Hills Dr, Los Angeles.

Specific changes were made to the interior decor of the property before capturing the sequences of Mitchell’s home. Other important sequences from the pilot season of Modern Family were filmed around the west side of Los Angeles.

Additional sequences from the remaining seasons were also filmed in various other parts of Los Angeles. Such as, the scenes depicting Jay and Gloria’s modern-styled home were filmed inside a real house located at 121 South Cliffwood Avenue.

Apart from filming the sequences of Dunphy’s House, the production members used the same property to shoot almost all seasons of the show; important to mention that the 20th Century Fox Studios, located at 10201 Pico Blvd, Century City was also used for 11 long seasons, to capture the interior sequences of the show.
