Important to mention that the makers did think of filming this series in and around the UK. But, after reviewing the production budget, the creative heads decided to scout a number of ideal filming locations in California.

So, finally, after a specialized team scouted some locations in California, according to the description given by the makers, the creative heads decided to film the first season of Our Flag Means Death entirely around different locations of this beautiful state on the west coast. However, the second season of this show, which has recently been released, was actually filmed in New Zealand.

The principal for the pilot season began in the third week of September 2021 and continued till the first week of November, of the same year. The second season of Our Flag Means Death took less time to shoot, as the production members pre-arranged most of the logistics required for shooting.

California | USA

As mentioned, the pilot season of Our Flag Means Death was filmed in and around the beautiful state of California, entirely. So in order to shoot the sequences of the first episode, the production members arranged a luxurious mansion, located in the posh neighborhood of Los Angeles, to depict the ancestral home of Bonnet. 

Major changes were made to the exterior structure of the property, to give it a vintage look. The production members also turned around the overall interior decor of the mansion, and used old fixtures and chandeliers to showcase the pompous lifestyle of the Bonnet’s. 

Other pivotal sequences were filmed near Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, located at 301 North Baldwin Avenue. The production members then used Warner Brothers Burbank Studios, 4000 Warner Boulevard, Burbank to recreate the interior sequences of the show.

Christchurch | New Zealand

The filming for the second season of Our Flag Means Death was done in New Zealand. Right after the pilot season of the show was released, the production members began scouting for locations outside of America. 

One of the creative heads suggested filming in and around the gorgeous city of Christchurch. All other members of the team agreed, after reviewing the shooting budget and acquired the shooting permissions from the New Zealand government, well in advance. 

The production members also pre-arranged the logistics, and transported it to the shooting location in New Zealand, before the filming began. 

Pivotal sequences from the second season were then filmed, on the banks of the Avon River. The filming crew also captured some outdoor sequences near the famous Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Filming in New Zealand lasted for 6 weeks in total, after which the crew returned to California, and captured the remaining sequences inside Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank.
