Where Was Point Break Filmed? Let’s Know This Crime Action Flick Closely!

As I mentioned in the beginning, there are two versions of Point Break, and in this article, we are discussing Ericson Core’s version of the movie. However, it’s also important to talk about the original version of Point Break, which was released in 1991, so that it’s easier for you to point out the differences between the two versions at a glance.

First of all, the commercial performance of the original version was way better than Core’s version. Plus, the storyline of the first version of the movie was quite different as well.

Since Ericson Core wanted to present something uniquely brilliant to the audience, he decided to change the premise of the original storyline. But Ericson thought it would be a good idea to keep the same theme and title of the film, like the first rendition.  Another interesting fact about the latter version of the film is that Ericson not only gave direction but was also behind the lens.

In other words, apart from directing Point Break, Ericson Core also handled the cinematography. The director mainly took the decision to shoot the sequences all by himself because pretty fixated on the shooting techniques he was going to use in this film.

Apart from that, Core was also certain about the filming locations right from the beginning. So during the starting stages of production, the director and his crew scouted beautiful shooting spots in and around  Austria and Venezuela.

After the main filming locations were decided, the director and crew went to Mexico and other beautiful countries to choose additional locations. As soon as the filming locations for the remaining scenes of Point Break were selected, Ericson instructed the crew to start the filming process.

The principal photography of Point Break commenced in the final week of June 2014 and continued for 5 months or so. The majority of the outdoor scenes of this movie were filmed in Austria and Venezuela.

Meanwhile, the remaining outdoor scenes were filmed in different locations in Mexico and a couple of other picturesque locations. Since the production budget of this project was over $100 million, Ericson thought it would be best to capture the outdoor scenes in different countries.

The shooting process of Point Break was over before the final week of December 2014.

Now let’s discuss in detail where was Point Break filmed.

Austria

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the main characters for the first time, was filmed in Austria. The production members filmed the bank robbery scene inside a vacant commercial building located in Tyrol.

Before the interior shots of the heist were shot, the production members turned around the vacant building to make it look like a bank. In fact, the basement of the building was transformed to look like a heavily guarded bank vault.

Other important outdoor shots in Austria were filmed in and around Carinthia, which is located in the southern region of Austria. The car and truck chase sequence in the mountains was filmed in this region, after which the production members moved to the next shooting location.

Other Filming Locations

The remaining scenes of the film were shot in Mexico, Switzerland, and Venezuela. After capturing the outdoor shots in Austria, the production members arrived in a beautiful South American country.

The free climbing scenes in the movie were filmed near Angel Falls, which is located in Canaima National Park, Venezuela. The production members shot a couple of scenes in several Swiss cantons and then prepared to capture the final scene of the movie.

The ending scene of the movie was filmed in Baja Studios, Mexico, after which the entire shooting process ended.
