The story of Roman Holiday is set in and around the beautiful and historic city of Rome. I think you’d be surprised to know that the actual filming of this Oscar-winning film also took place in Italy.
Since the director was absolutely mesmerized by the picturesque backdrop of the outdoor locations in Italy, he wanted to share the same with the audience. So, instead of capturing the exterior scenes in America, Wyler thought of shooting the majority of his film in Italy.
It’s also important to mention that some sequences of this movie were captured in California. However, none of them were outdoor scenes. The production members used a well-equipped studio in California to film the interior scenes of the movie.
The principal photography of the Roman Holiday in the third week of June 1952 and continued till the second week of October of the same year. Throughout the entire course of shooting, the production members traveled to different locations in Italy and captured several breathtaking shots.
The majority of the shooting took place in the Lombardy and the Campania region in Italy. While some scenes were also filmed in the west-central region of Italy, specifically around the city of Lazio.
By the first week of October 1952, the production members of Roman Holiday returned to America. For the next two weeks, the filming crew invested most of their time in perfecting the captured outdoor footage and filming the interior scenes in California.

Other important scenes were captured near Via della Rotonda and Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti. A vacant shop was turned around by the production members to make it look like a coffee shop. The sequence where the lead actor meets the Princess for the first time was filmed inside the same shop.
However, the same property has now been converted into a fashion apparel store. In fact, many other shops and other properties which were used for shooting have now been totally transformed.
Some are turned into commercial space for other businesses to rent, while others are demolished and converted into modern high-rise buildings.
But one of the seven wonders of the world, The Colosseum, still retains its former glory. The final quarter of Roman Holiday was filmed around this incredible architecture in Rome. After all these scenes were captured, the production members returned to America.
