Where Was Rust Filmed? Baldwin’s Upcoming Western Flick!!

The making of Rust started back in the summer of 2020. But due to a major unfortunate incident which took place on set during the filming of one of the action scenes, the schedule got delayed. The main cinematographer of the movie, Halyna Hutchins, was killed after sustaining a bullet injury.

While performing a duel scene, Alec Baldwin accidentally shot the cinematographer on set. Halyna was rushed to the hospital by the production members but later succumbed to fatal injuries.

Thus after this horrible incident, the shooting paused for quite some time. Joel Souza, the director of the film then asked the production members to revisit the previously scouted filming locations in New Mexico.

Rust was originally decided to be filmed in parts of New Mexico and Chile. But the director later conferred with other creative heads of the unit, and arrived at the final conclusion, to shoot the entire movie in America.

So, without waiting any longer, let’s have a detailed discussion about where was Rust filmed, and find out more about the specific shooting sites.

Santa Fe, New Mexico | USA

The opening scene of the film, where we see the lead actor hiding inside a tavern, after evading the local sheriff, was filmed in the city of Santa Fe. The production members used a sparsely populated area of the city, to depict the old town of Kansas during the late 1700s.

The tavern shown in the opening scene of the movie was built from scratch. The production members had pre-arranged the logistics required for construction and filming, which made their tasks easier.

Important to mention that, while performing one of the action sequences on the outskirts of Santa Fe, the incident of accidental shooting took place. The entire filming process was then halted for quite some time, as the legal authorities sealed the set.

But after the lead actor was reportedly acquitted of the case, the production members had to acquire shooting permission from the court. A number of pivotal sequences were then captured by a new cinematographer, who later joined the project.

The production members then moved to the next filming location in Santa Fe, to shoot the remaining sequences of the movie.

Bonanza Creek, New Mexico | USA

The Bonanza Creek Ranch, located at 15 Bonanza Creek Lane was used to shoot the remaining half of the movie. The sequences depicting the hideout of Harland and his grandson were filmed here.

The production members had to arrange a variety of farm animals, from a local farm owner, before shooting the interior sequences of the stable. Vintage cars were also brought in from California, to film the car chase scene in the film.

The majority of the time and money was spent in building the make-believe structures of the Sheriff’s office and Harland’s family home.
