Where Was Secretariat Filmed? Let’s Know This Sports Comedy Flick Closely!
Before joining this project, Randall Wallace had previously directed blockbuster movies like Braveheart, The Man in the Iron Mask, and Pearl Harbor. However, none of these films were from the sports-drama genre.
Yet, Randall did not disappoint the audience at all. In fact, the critics and audiences were absolutely captivated by the overall storyline and the stellar performance of the Hollywood A-listers.
But, other than these factors, the filming locations of Secretariat also played a vital role in making the screenplay more interesting for the cinema audience.
The story of Secretariat is set partly in Colorado and Kentucky. However, you’d be surprised to know that most of the scenes were filmed in and around the southern state of Louisiana.
Apart from a few pivotal scenes which were captured in Kentucky, the director refrained from shooting any outdoor scenes in Colorado.
The principal photography of Secretariat began in the first week of August 2009 and continued till the end of November of the same year. The shooting process went on smoothly for the most part.
Randall’s previous experience of handling a big team came in handy, as he was able to manage the crew flawlessly. The production members, too, stayed on top of the filming dates by arranging most of the logistics in advance.
Let us now go ahead and take a closer look at where was Secretariat filmed.
Louisiana | USA
The shooting of the Secretariat commenced in the southern state of Louisiana. The opening sequence of the film, where we see the character of Penny and her husband, was actually filmed in the city of Carencro.
The production members used a medium-sized house located on the outskirts of Carencro, to shoot the sequences depicting Penny’s home. Other important scenes from the first quarter of the movie were shot near Evangeline Downs Area.
The production members then moved to the city of Lafayette. This beautiful city is located on the banks of the Vermilion River and is considered to be an integral part of this southern state.
The scene where the female lead meets with other members of her family attending a funeral service were actually shot in Lafayette. Before moving to Kentucky, the production members filmed some other outdoor scenes in Opelousas.
Kentucky | USA
The second half of the movie was shot in Kentucky entirely. The scenes depicting the stable of Penny’s champion stallion were shot inside a local farm situated near Churchill Downs. However, the final sequence of the movie was filmed at a different location.
The production members traveled to the city of Lexington to capture the final scene of the film. The ending sequence of the movie depicting the race was filmed using the Keeneland Racetrack.
This famous racetrack in Lexington is located at 4201 Versailles Road and is often used for hosting derby cups and other events.
More or less, these are all the filming locations used for shooting Secretariat’s outdoor scenes. After these scenes were filmed, the production members wrapped the entire shooting process.
