These films were hugely popular amongst fans, who thoroughly enjoyed George’s style of direction. Thus, gathering the same kind of feedback, Roy Hill wanted to make a film, which appealed to the mass.

So, after coming on board, the director asked the production members to scout potential filming locations in and around the state of Pennsylvania, the same place where the story was set in. Soon the crew came up with a list of idyllic shooting sites in Johnstown and Pittsburgh. George approved the potential filming sites which were scouted. Important to mention that the director later added a few places in New York, right before the principal photography began in March 1976.

The majority of the sequences were filmed in and around the state of Pennsylvania, as it was the hometown of the players of Charlestown Chiefs in the film. An ice hockey rink, located in the city of Johnstown was used to capture the sequences of the initial minor league matches. The production member took special filming permission from the authorities of the rink and made minor adjustments to the indoor stadium as well. The stadium was located on the outskirts of Johnstown, which made it easier for the crew to transport the logistics without any hassle.

So after extensively filming in Johnstown for two and a half weeks, the production members moved to the next filming location in Pennsylvania. The sequences depicting the individual houses of the players were filmed in the city of Pittsburgh. This historical city is located in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania, at the junction of 3 major rivers.

Small-sized, Victorian-style houses located near the North Shore neighborhood of Pittsburgh, were used to capture the outdoor shots of Reggie and Braden’s family homes. The sequence where we see the players getting involved in a street brawl after the ice hockey game was also filmed here.

New York | USA

After the majority of the outdoor sequences were filmed in various parts of Pennsylvania, the production members traveled to the neighboring state of New York.
