The makers of Somebody I Used to Know initially wanted to shoot the film on location. However, after Dave reviewed the production budget, he decided to explore other spots which were more economically feasible to film in. 

Thus, after conferring with the other heads, France instructed the production members to scout for filming locations in and around the state of Oregon. Dave then visited the potential shooting locations in person and decided to film the majority of the film there.

Although, before the shooting began, Dave also decided to shoot a few pivotal sequences of the movie in Washington. The principal photography began in the summer of 2022 and continued for several weeks. 

As per reports, during the course of shooting in one of the cities in Oregon, the production members ran into a major issue. A set of high-valued lenses used to capture long shots went missing in transit. This incident forced the production members to stop filming for a couple of days until the items were retrieved.

But, other than that, the original shooting schedule remained intact for the most part, as the production members successfully arranged other logistics, well in advance.

Leavenworth, Washington | USA

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the mesmerizing backdrop of the Cascade Mountains, was actually filmed in Leavenworth. This Bavarian-styled rustic village is located in the central region of Washington.

The production members used a vintage-styled tavern located near the market area of this village, to capture the breathtaking scenes of the Cascade Mountains. The sequence where Ally meets her business partner in the movie was also filmed inside the same local tavern.

Additional outdoor sequences were captured in and around the village of Leavenworth, after which the production members moved to the next shooting location.

Oregon | USA

So, after the production members captured a bunch of picturesque sequences in and around the village of Leavenworth, they arrived in the city of Estacada,Oregon. Important to mention that, the majority of the sequences of the movie, were captured in various locations of this city.

The sequence of the River Bar, where Ally runs into her ex-boyfriend, was actually filmed inside a real and famous bar, located near the downtown area of Estacada. The production members had to install special lighting equipment, in order to capture the interior sequences properly.

The bar was underlit for some reason, thus Dave asked the production members to change the lights and overall decor of the bar. The owner of the bar was pretty chill about it and even assisted the production members in whichever way he could.

Other pivotal sequences of the movie were captured on the outskirts of Estacada, but before the crew could commence shooting in Portland, they ran into a huge problem.  While transporting the logistics, some equipment went missing. 

Thankfully, after the lost items were somehow retrieved, the final sequence of the movie was shot in the city of Portland. The production members then used a well equipped studio, located in the eastern side of Portland, and captured the remaining interior scenes.

The story of Somebody I Used to Know revolves around the character of Ally, a middle-aged American woman, who rediscovers her life while visiting her family. At the beginning of the movie, Ally appears to talk about her boring life with one of her friends, over the phone. The same friends entice Ally to take a break from her tiring life, and visit her parents.

As the story progresses further, the female lead finally returns back to her hometown. Ally appears to be delighted initially after meeting her parents.
