This Oscar-winning film is set in California, but interestingly enough, not all outdoor scenes of Sound of Metal were filmed in America. Even though Darius Marder had directed only two movies prior to this project, both of them were absolutely amazing.
Not only did Loot and The Place Beyond the Pines become cult classic films, but they were also commercially successful. Marder had a clean track record of making films that left a long-lasting impression on the audience.
So, drawing from the same experience, the director thought of implementing new ideas and unique shooting techniques while making Sound of Metal. Darius co-wrote the screenplay with Abraham Marder and then started looking for ideal filming locations.
The shooting locations in America were scouted within a couple of weeks. The production members searched for perfect filming locations in and around the state of Massachusetts. A couple of weeks later, the filming crew started looking for the next shooting location.
Since Marder wanted to shoot the final part of the movie in an international location, he asked the production members to make a list of potential locations. However, he also asked the production members to select locations within the production budget.
So, according to the instructions given by the director, the production members searched for locations in and around Belgium, Bulgaria, and London. Eventually, Marder selected the locations in Belgium and then asked the crew to start shooting.
The principal photography of Sound of Metal began in the summer of 2018. The entire shooting process lasted for more than two months. However, the production members didn’t film continuously. The director gave breaks in between. So, even though the production members had to film the majority of the outdoor scenes in and around Massachusetts only, they still took much time. The second phase of the shooting took place in Belgium.

The shooting process of Sound of Metal began in Boston, Massachusetts. The production members used a beaten-up RV to capture the interior scenes of the lead actor’s trailer home. However, the production members didn’t capture this near the trailer park in Boston.
In fact, they selected a sparsely populated area located on the outskirts of Boston to shoot this particular sequence in the movie. Other outdoor shots were also filmed in Lynn and Danvers. The sequences of Capitol Diner, Mass Merchandise Mart, and Edwards Bridge were filmed in the city of Lynn, after which the production members moved to the next location.
The iconic sequence of the parking lot where the lead actor goes into a state of relapse and later collapses on the road was filmed near Hollywood Hits Theaters in Danvers.
Belgium
The final part of the movie, where we see the lead actor performing in a musical concert, was filmed in Antwerp, Belgium. The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of a large concert hall and filmed this scene.
