After Ballard finished working on the script alongside other screenwriters, he asked the production members to scout for filming locations.

Ideal shooting locations in Canada, Italy, and America were scouted by the filming crew and later reported to the director. Carroll then arranged a special meeting with other heads of the unit and selected a few locations from the list.

The majority of the filming took place in Canada, specifically in and around the province of Ontario. Whereas, a few pivotal sequences of the movie were also shot in Italy and America as well.

The principal photography began in the first week of July 1977 and continued till the end of November of the same year. In spite of shooting in various locations, the production members worked hard and managed to stay on top of shooting dates. Thus, the filming schedule remained as planned.

Other important sequences in Ontario were filmed inside Liberty Theatre and Kenilworth Avenue. The movie hall scenes where Alec appears to watch newsreels with his father were actually filmed inside Liberty Theatre, located near Kleinburg.

Additional outdoor sequences of the movie, such as the horse-chase scene were captured near Whitehall Rd and Portland Street in Toronto. The production members then traveled overseas and filmed the remaining sequences of the movie.

The production members traveled to Sardinia to capture this beautiful sequence of the film. No special lighting equipment was used while filming the outdoor sequences of the beach at night, as the director wanted to utilize the natural light from the moon.

The remaining interior sequences of the movie were captured inside the famous Cinecitta Studios, located near the downtown area of Rome. The production members constructed a make-believe set of the farmhouse inside the same studio and extensively captured the interior scenes.

Filming in Italy lasted for one month or so, after which the production members returned to America and shot a handful of sequences. Filming continued till the end of November 1977, and the crew then wrapped the entire shooting process.
