The Call was an overall commercial success. Another version of this horror thriller film with the same name was released in 2020 as well. However, the Korean version of the movie was more successful than the latter version.

Friends, let’s start with the basics, after that we’ll discuss in detail where was The Call filmed. So, the original idea of this project was inspired by a British horror film that was released almost 9 years prior to this movie.

Lee Chung-Hyun, the director of the Korean version of the movie, closely followed the previous version and took some interesting ideas from it. However, Lee was conscious enough to change certain elements in the story to basically connect with the South Korean audience.

However, as per the commercial performance of this movie post its release, The Call was received well by the global audience too. This bone-chilling film was released in a number of languages so that a wide range of audiences could enjoy this brilliant film.

Another interesting fact about The Call which might surprise you is that Lee Chung-Hyun not only directed the film, but he also wrote the screenplay for it. Since Lee was primarily inclined towards showcasing a South Korean story, he decided to set the story in the same country.

Plus, in order to keep things fairly simple and logical, the director also decided to shoot The Call in and around South Korea. Although, during the initial stages of production, the director intended to release this movie in the theaters.

But, due to the unfortunate turn of events and the onset of Covid-19, the release of The Call was adversely impacted and had to be digitally released on Netflix. 

The American version of The Call was shot in and around the city of Los Angeles, California. However, as I mentioned before, the Korean version was filmed in and around South Korea. The principal photography of The Call began in November 2019 and concluded by the first month of 2020.

The shooting process lasted for two months or so, after which the filming crew began working on the promotion of the movie. So, let us now discuss in detail where was The Call filmed and take a closer look at the shooting sites in South Korea.

The Republic of Korea or popularly known as South Korea, is located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Apart from housing a number of multi-billion dollar tech companies, South Korea’s contribution towards making the entertainment industry even richer has been recognized by critics and audiences from all parts of the world.

From BTS to super-popular Kdramas, to producing legendary films like Oldboy and Parasite, South Korean filmmakers and artists have never ceased to entertain the audience. 

So, in order to keep up with the same fervor and make something original, Lee decided to commence the first phase of filming in Seoul. However, the opening scene of the movie wasn’t filmed in the urban part of the city filled with high-rise buildings.

But, Lee decided to shed light on the other side of the spectrum and shoot the first of The Call on the outskirts of Seoul. These scenes were primarily used to depict the life of Young-Sook or better known as the “lady from the past” in the movie.

The production members selected a small-sized house located in the Dongbinggo-Dong area to capture the sequences of Young-Sook’s home. The interior sequences of Young-Sook’s house, where she gets the mysterious phone call, were also filmed inside the same property.

After these scenes were shot, the production members moved to the downtown area of Seoul. The sequences depicting Seo-Yeon’s home were filmed in and around this modern part of the city. 

In fact the interior shots of the movie were also captured inside a famous studio located in the downtown area of Seoul. Additional outdoor sequences of The Call were filmed in and around the capital city.

The shooting process continued till the second week of January 2020, after which the production members wrapped the entire shooting process. Let us now take a closer look at where was The Call filmed.
