Even though the story of The Great Gatsby is set on Long Island, you’d be surprised to know that the filming didn’t take place in America. That’s right, guys; the makers particularly avoided filming in the USA to bring down the production cost. 

During the initial stage of filmmaking, Baz Luhrmann invested most of his time bringing the ensemble cast together. After the cast members were finalized, the director asked the crew to scout for potential filming locations across Australia. 

Soon a number of locations were selected in different locations across the state of New South Wales. The majority of the sequences were then captured in and around the city of Sydney. The principal photography began in the first week of September 2011 and continued till January 2012.

The production members filmed the movie’s opening sequence in Centennial Park, Sydney. The crew captured the exterior shots of Gatsby’s estate and Nick Carraway’s house after constructing a make-believe set of Carraway’s medium-sized home near the Park.

Other pivotal sequences in Sydney were filmed near Cook Road, depicting the entrance to Buchanan’s Mansion. Whereas to capture the scenes showcasing the Valley of the Ashes, the production members traveled to Balmain, Sydney. Additional shooting permissions had to be taken from the White Bay Power Station authorities before capturing the interior sequences inside the premises.

Additional filming took place around Glebe Island in Sydney. The filming crew had to struggle while transporting the logistics to this Island. But, after persisting for a long the director maneuvered through the issue and instructed the crew to transport the required equipment by airlifting. 

The filming crew then finally moved to shoot the movie’s final sequence. The exterior sequences depicting the funeral scene of Gatsby were captured inside Waverley Cemetery located in Bronte.

All other interior sequences of the movie were then filmed inside the Disney Studios in Sydney. This famous and well-equipped studio, located in Moore Park, has been used by numerous filmmakers over the years. So after the crew members constructed the set of Gatsby’s home, additional shots were filmed to depict the inner area of his mansion.

Important to mention that some scenes were also filmed inside the Plaza Hotel, located at 768 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan. The sequences inside the hotel were captured after the production members wrapped up the entire filming process in Australia and returned back to America.
