Khalil reaches over to the car’s window to check on Starr and picks up a hairbrush. But, the police officer shoots him thrice, thinking that the hairbrush that Khalil picked up is a gun. The cop later discovers that Khalil was completely unarmed. 

Khalil’s death becomes national news, and protests break out all over. Initially, Starr chooses to keep her identity as the key witness a secret. Later, she is motivated by a human rights advocate, April Ofrah to come forward and stand in Khalil’s defense and help him get justice. 

So, in the movie, we see Starr come forward and fight to get justice for her best friend. She stands up for what she believes is right.
