The premise of The Hateful Eight is set in Wyoming. However, right from the beginning of the project, Tarantino wanted to shoot the sequences of the film elsewhere. Thus, after Quentin adjusted the script and finished selecting the cast members, he asked the production members to scout for filming locations. 

Various places were scouted then, according to the instructions given by the director, and finally, the states of Colorado and California were finalized as the primary shooting spots. The director visited the locations in-person and then agreed to commence filming.

The principal photography began in the last month of 2014 and continued till the first week of April 2015. The filming schedule got delayed initially, but thankfully the production members made up for the lost time, and finished filming on time.

The majority of the sequences were filmed in and around California, while some pivotal sequences were shot in distinct locations in Colorado. So, without further ado, let’s discuss where was The Hateful Eight filmed, and find out more about the shooting spots.

The opening sequence of the movie was shot in the former Victorian county of Telluride. As the director wanted to capture the breathtaking backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, exterior shots were taken in and around this beautiful town. 

The sequence, where we are introduced to the lead character of the movie for the first time was also filmed here. Other pivotal sequences were captured inside a famous ranch in Telluride. The production members had to take special permission from the owners of Schmid Ranch, before shooting inside it. 

The horses shown in the movie were all rented from the owner of the same farm. Important to mention that the filming crew maintained necessary precautions while filming with the farm animals, and no harm was caused.

After the shooting was completed in Telluride, the production members moved to the next filming location in Colorado. Important exterior shots were captured near the closely-knitted town of Wilson Mesa, located 7 miles north of Telluride. 

This area is surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, thus the director asked the filming crew to capture exterior shots of the iconic Wilson Peak. Special lighting equipment was used to film the scenes during the night. Filming in Colorado lasted till the first week of March 2015, after which the production members moved to California.

The majority of the interior sequences of the movie were recreated inside a special studio in Hollywood. The Red Studios, located at 846 North Cahuenga Blvd was used to recreate the cabin. The production members constructed the structure of the make-believe cabin, in no time. 

Several interior sequences were then captured, inside the same studio, before the filming process finally ended by the month of April 2015. The crew then started working on post-production.

As mentioned earlier, the basic premise of The Hateful Eight revolves around the character of John Ruth, a ruthless Bounty hunter from the west. At the very beginning of the film, John runs into Major Marquis Warren, an old ally, while escorting an outlaw to the town of Red Rock.

Upon reaching the old town, the lead actor gets pitted against other nefarious criminals, who soon start provoking him. Ruth’s short fuse is soon lit because of the ongoing goading, and he finally decides to unleash wrath! Watch The Hateful Eight to witness how John tackles a bunch of hooligans, all by himself.
