So, after the script was adjusted and the suitable cast members were selected, the production members began looking for potential filming locations around Denmark.

After several weeks, the Rudersdal Municipality area, located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, was selected to be the primary shooting location for The Rain. The majority of the sequences from all three seasons of the show were filmed around Rudesdal, over the years. However, it is important to mention that a few pivotal sequences of the show were also filmed in Sweden.

After the shooting locations were decided, the principal photography commenced in the summer of 2018. The crew took 6 weeks to film the pilot season of The Rain. However, the remaining seasons which were later released, took much less to get filmed. 

As the majority of the sequences of the show are filmed in outdoor locations, the production members arranged the filming permissions well in advance. The filming schedule remained intact, for most of the part, as the crew worked hard to stay on top of the shooting dates.

The opening sequence of the show, where we see the male and female lead actors, inside a heavily guarded bunker, was actually filmed inside a vacant building in Copenhagen. The production members took special shooting permission from the owners of the commercial building and used the basement to shoot the sequences depicting the confinement in the show.

Other pivotal outdoor sequences of the show were later filmed around the municipality area of Rudersdal. Specifically, the sub-urban district of Sollerod, was where the majority of the outdoor sequences were captured through all three seasons of The Rain.

Additional gripping sequences, showcasing the security headquarters in the show, were filmed inside The Maritime Museum of Denmark. The production members had to acquire special shooting permission from the Danish government, before filming inside this epic and famous museum.

The production members then moved to a forest, located near Sollerod. The sequences showcasing the survival journey of Rasmus and his sister were actually captured around this location.

Then finally for the third and final season of The Rain, the production members traveled overseas to Sweden. As per reports, a well-equipped Swedish studio was also used to film the interior sequences of the final season of The Rain.

Plot Of The Rain | What’s It About

The basic premise of The Rain follows the character of Rasmus Andersen and his sister Simone, who struggle to survive after a pandemic wipes out 90% of Denmark’s population. At the very beginning of the series, Simone and Rasmus, appear to hide inside a bunker with their father.

But as the story progresses further, the brother-sister duo loses their father, after he succumbs to the viral infection. The female lead then musters up the courage and encourages his brother to leave the medical facility.
