Later, when Sam Donovan was appointed to direct the first four episodes of Three Pines, he began minutely scouting for idyllic filming locations in and around the city of Montreal. The principal photography began in the second week of August 2021, after the shooting locations were finalized. Filming lasted for a little more than four months and was completed more or less without any delays.

The majority of the filmmakers, while shooting in Canada, opt to shoot in the province of British Columbia, specifically in and around the city of Vancouver. However, as mentioned earlier the makers of Three Pines were inclined to capture the authentic and beautiful scenery of Quebec from the beginning, than saving the filming tax by shooting elsewhere.

Thus, after arriving in Canada, the crew readily began filming in the picturesque city of Montreal. Outdoor shots of Notre Dame Basilica and the triple-peaked Mt. Royal were captured, after which the crew moved to the other parts of Montreal to shoot the remaining sequences of the pilot season.

Eastern Townships, Quebec | Canada

Before the shooting began for the second half of Three Pines, the production unit was forced to stop filming for a couple of days, due to a snowstorm. After the filming resumed the crew captured exterior shots of the detective’s home, located in the Eastern Townships region. This historically-rich place, situated in the southeastern part of Quebec was ideal to portray an old Canadian town.

The crew took several shots of the closely-knitted neighborhoods of the region to depict the surroundings of the detective’s home. The majority of the scenes which showcase the homicides and the investigation in the series were also filmed here. The shooting lasted for 6 and a half weeks in this location then the unit wrapped up the entire filming process.
