The story of Wild is set around the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The place where we see Cheryl’s family home in the movie. However, the shooting didn’t take place on location. Jean-Marc, slightly deviated from the original story of Cheryl’s novel and explored some untapped locations of America for this film.

Thus, before the director invested his time in other areas of pre-production, he asked the filming crew to scout for various filming locations across the mid-western part of America. Admittedly, a few locations from the West Coast were later scouted as well.

The director went over the shooting locations and then selected a couple of ideal shooting locations around the states of California and Oregon. Important to mention that, the majority of the sequences were captured around various beautiful places of Oregon, whereas, only a couple of pivotal sequences were filmed in California. 

The principal photography began in the second week of October 2013 and continued till the first month of 2014. The shooting schedule which the director planned at the start of the project was delayed. The mismanagement of the production members, with the logistics required for shooting, cost the entire team to fall behind on shooting dates. 

As per the reports, the filming crew tried hard to make up for the lost time, however, the shooting schedule was eventually delayed. This matter snowballed further, and eventually pushed the original release date of the movie, as well.

California | USA

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the character of Cheryl, mourning the death of her beloved mother, inside her family home in Minneapolis, was actually filmed in California. The production members arranged a medium-sized home, located in an upscale neighborhood, and filmed the interior scenes of the female lead’s home.

Other pivotal outdoor sequences of the film, were captured around the Mojave Desert in California. The pivotal scene of the movie, where we see the character of Cheryl making the first step towards her inspiring solo journey, was filmed near Mojave.

The production members had to use special lighting equipment to shoot the beautiful outdoor sequences of the desert during dawn. The filming crew then moved to the next shooting location.

Oregon | USA

The majority of the outdoor sequences of Wild were captured around the state of Oregon. The sequences showcasing the middle part of Cheryl’s journey, on the Pacific Crest Trail were captured near Smith Rock State Park.

Additional scenes where we see the character of Cheryl taking a rest before covering the last couple of miles of her solo journey were captured inside Courtesy Inn Motel. The production members took special shooting permission and booked this famous Motel, which is located at 11342 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland for a week.

The ending sequence of the film was shot on Bridge of the Gods, located near Columbia River Gorge. The production members then captured the remaining interior sequences of the movie, inside Mississippi Studios, located at 3939 N Mississippi Ave.

At the beginning of the film, the character of Cheryl is shown to be in a completely dark mental space, after the demise of her mother. The situation gets worse for the female lead, when her loving partner decides to end the romantic relationship.
