Taylor Sheridan, after conferring with other creative heads of the unit, decided to shoot 1923 at a different location altogether as compared to the other western shows released on Paramount. The makers decided to film in and around the American state of Montana, majorly, and capture the remaining sequences in the African continent.
The principal photography began earlier this year and was complete by the middle of June. Considering the hot climate of the African countries, the production unit came to the conclusion to capture the sequences in South Africa and Tanzania first. The filming schedule remained unchanged throughout the entire course of shooting, as no uncalled incidents forced the schedule to be delayed.
The crew arranged special cameras and lenses, to capture the beautiful backdrop of the African countries. Other filming permissions were also fetched in time. Now let us discuss in-depth where was 1923 filmed, and find out more about the specific shooting sites.
Tanzania, South Africa
The production unit of 1923 arrived at the gorgeous East-African country of Tanzania at the beginning of the filming schedule, due to the reasons that I’ve mentioned earlier. So after reaching the capital city of Dodoma, the crew began capturing outdoor sequences. Most of them were filmed on the outskirts of the city. Then a couple of other pivotal scenes were filmed in Serengeti National Park, after which the crew traveled overseas to South Africa.
The shooting halted for a couple of days upon arriving at the capital of South Africa. However, the crew soon picked up the pace and quickly captured the beautiful backdrop of Cape Town. Filming only lasted for about a week or so at this location, however, a number of significant scenes were shot during this time.
Montana | USA
The primary filming took place in the western state of Montana in America. So after returning to the United States, the production unit began filming in different cities in Montana. Park City and Hamilton are where the second half of the first season of 1923 were filmed. Special lenses and cameras were already pre-arranged by the crew, to capture the beautiful backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
The majority of the indoor sequences were shot inside a renowned studio located in the city of Butte. The crew constructed classic-styled taverns and salons to recreate a look of the wild west. Filming was completed by the middle of June, and after that the members of the unit started preparing for the promotion of the show.
