Where Was Black Summer Filmed? Let’s Know This Horror Series Closely!

Karl Schaefer had previously worked in the making of Z Nation. Other than pitching in as an executive producer. Schaefer also co-created the series, which inspired him to make Black Summer 5 years later.

So, drawing from the same experience, Karl helped the production members of Black Summer to refrain from making the same mistakes that were made during the making of Z Nation. After the cast members of the show were selected, Karl and his team began looking for filming locations.

The team avoided scouting in and around America to keep the production budget low and instead searched for potential filming locations in Canada. The province of Alberta is where the majority of the outdoor sequences of Black Summer were filmed.

The principal photography was done in parts of Beiseker, Irricana, and Calgary. Important to mention that only a select few sequences were filmed in Irricana for the show’s second season.

The pilot season of Black Summer was entirely filmed in Beiseker and Calgary in the final week of July 2018. Shooting continued till the end of September of the same year. The second season of the show was also filmed within 2 months in the following year.

Calgary, Alberta | Canada

The opening sequence from the pilot season of the show, where we see Rose’s daughter for the first time, was actually filmed in Alberta. The production members took special filming permission from the administration of Elizabeth High School.

The interior sequences of the classroom, where Rose’s daughter takes refuge during the zombie apocalypse, were filmed inside this school. Other important sequences of the show were filmed near Stampede Park and McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

The production members of Black Summer then moved to a place located near the Calgary Tower. The remaining outdoor sequences from the first half of the show were then filmed around this place.

Other Filming Locations | Canada

Additional sequences of Black Summer were filmed in the village of Beiseker. This small yet picturesque village is located 70 KMs northeast of Calgary. The sequences depicting Rose’s encounter with the undead were filmed in and around this village.

But, before filming the scenes around this village, the production members stopped by a nearby town. The cast members portraying the vicious zombies were then given the look of the undead with the help of prosthetic makeup.

The shooting of Black Summer also occurred in Irricana, which is located near Rocky View County. After filming these sequences, the production members returned to Calgary and shot the remaining interior scenes inside a studio.

Important to mention that digital production methods like CGI and VFX were also used to render the gut-wrenching scenes of the zombies.
