The filming of Candy took place entirely in Australia. After Neil Armfield joined the project, he tasked the production members to look for perfect filming locations in and around the state of Victoria and New South Wales.

Important to mention that, the majority of the shooting took place in New South Wales, whereas only a handful of sequences were filmed around the state of Victoria. You’d be amazed to know that some parts of the movie were actually shot on location.

The principal photography began in the middle of March 2005 and was completed by the first week of May. The production members did run through a series of predicaments while shooting the outdoor sequences of the movie, which we’d further discuss.

Sydney, New South Wales | Australia

The opening scene of the film, where we see the lead character working inside a studio, was actually filmed in Sydney. The production members used a vacant property located near Hillsdale and turned it around to look like an art studio. 

Other pivotal sequences in Sydney were filmed, Kings Cross and Luna Park. While capturing one of the outdoor sequences in this location, the production members ran into a huge problem. Reportedly, the crowd that flocked to the shooting location to see Heath, barged in and damaged a camera.

Thankfully, no actors were harmed as the police were called to the spot. But, the production members took several weeks to replace the special lens of the camera which was damaged.

However, after the situation was tackled, the crew resumed shooting again. Important sequences of the University shown in the movie were filmed inside a public college located in Newtown.

Melbourne, Victoria | Australia

After filming the majority of the sequences in and around the state of New South Wales, the production members moved to Victoria. The final sequence of the movie was filmed in Melbourne. 

The sequences depicting the rehab in the film were shot inside a real drug rehabilitation center located on the outskirts of Melbourne. The production members had to acquire special shooting permission from the administrative department of the facility center. 

Filming in Melbourne only lasted for two weeks or so, after which the crew returned to Sydney and shot the remaining interior sequences.
