As I’ve mentioned earlier, the basic premise of Catch Me If You Can revolves around the young and dynamic character of Frank Abagnale Jr. However, what I didn’t mention was that this character is actually based on a real person.
Frank William Abagnale, the author of Catch Me If You Can, actually inspired Steven Spielberg into making this blockbuster movie. After acquiring the filming rights from Frank, Spielberg also took some advice from the author in making the character more intriguing for the movie’s audience.
As per reports, Spielberg was inclined towards selecting another actor for this role, however, DiCaprio ended up playing the lead role. But before the shooting process began, Spielberg arranged a special meeting between Leonardo and Frank and advised him to learn the mannerism of the character from the actual author in person.
While DiCaprio was invested in researching more about the character he was going to play, the director and his team were looking for filming locations in the meantime.

The second phase of filming commenced in Canada. Mainly the sequences featuring the backdrop of France were filmed here.
The production members filmed the final quarter of the movie in and around the city of Quebec and then returned to California. The remaining scenes were then captured inside a film studio located in the downtown area of Los Angeles.
