Christmas A la Mode, was a commercial success, as it went on to gain a considerable amount of viewership. Even if this Christmas special film was not nominated for any awards, the critics and audiences loved the film. Specifically appreciating the performance of the actors and the overall story.

The makers of Christmas A La Mode initially wanted to shoot the entire film in Canada to save filming tax credit. But after the filming budget was increased, other creative heads of the unit, implored the director to explore other suitable filming locations. 

Thus, after scouting for some time, director John Stimpson, came to the final conclusion to shoot Christmas A La Mode in and around New York and Massachusetts.

The principal photography began in the summer of 2019 and was completed in more or less 6 weeks. Thankfully, there were no reports of any incidents on set, which delayed the filming schedule.

New York City, New York | USA

The opening scene of the film, where we see Dorothy asking Charlie to pay a visit to her family farm, was actually filmed in New York. A medium-sized vacant office was turned around to capture this interior sequence. 

After this, the production took a couple of outdoor shots in Manhattan and then moved to the main filming location.

Massachusetts | USA

The sequence in the film, which showcases Emily’s family farm, was filmed in the small town of Sutton. The production unit, after contacting a local farm owner, drafted a contract to use the dairy farm for shooting. The exterior shots of the farm were captured after the unit arranged other required logistics for shooting. As the live stocks were already there on the farm, the entire filming process was much easier.

Although to shoot the interior sequence of Emily’s bakery, the unit used an actual bakery located outside of Sutton. A few other exterior shots were filmed on the outskirts of the town, to depict the surrounding area of Emily’s home. After that the production arrived at the capital city of Massachusetts, to film the remaining sequences inside a studio. The shooting lasted for about one week here, before the unit prepared for post-production.

Plot Of Christmas A La Mode | What’s It About

At the very beginning of the film, we are acquainted with the character of Gloria, imploring her colleague Charlie into buying her family farm in Massachusetts. Charlie, after conferring with his senior associates in New York, eventually decides to visit the farm, with Gloria.

Later in the film, the lead female character, Emily and her mother are shown taking care of the farm. But with the privatization of the agricultural sector by the American government, Emily’s family can hardly pay off the hefty lease amount every month. Emily, distressed by the situation, goes to a local bar and meets her childhood friend.

Soon after, Dorothy and her associate, Charlie arrive at the dairy farm and ask Emily to give up her share of the property. They offer $400,000 to Susan and almost convince her to sell the dairy farm. But Emily requests her mother to turn down the offer, as she was emotionally attached to the dairy farm that her late father built.

In the final quarter of the film, Emily prays for a Christmas miracle to happen, so that she could buy out her sister’s share. Meanwhile, Charlie grows romantic feelings for Emily, after hearing about her emotional story. He then decides to help Emily, save her father’s legacy. Finally, Charlie, comes up with an ingenious plan, to sell baked items using fresh farm products. 

Emily and Susan happily agree to the plan and begin to bake delicious cakes and patisserie using farm produce. Now, in order to know what happens next, you’d have to watch this movie as getting all the spoilers here, will ruin the experience for you.
