As Les was making his directorial debut with this film, he wanted to present something unique to the audience. Thus the director specifically asked the production members to look for locations in Los Angeles, which were seldom used by other filmmakers.

After several weeks, the filming crew came up with a number of perfect filming locations in Los Angeles, which matched the description of the director. Subsequently, Les checked the location in person but also added a number of shooting locations, which he had in mind. The principal photography for Encino Man began in the first week of December 1991 and continued till February 1992. During the course of the shooting, the director reportedly allowed the production members to take a week’s break, to celebrate Christmas with their families.

The opening sequence of the movie was filmed in West Hills, California. The interior sequence depicting the family home of Dave was actually captured inside a medium-sized house located at 7532 Sedgewick Court, West Hills. 

The production members also captured a number of outdoor shots around the same property, to depict the surrounding area of Dave’s home. Other important sequences depicting the Morgan family home were also captured around the same area of West Hills.

The sequence where Dave and his friend discover the frozen caveman in the movie was captured inside the same property. The production members, however, had to make a considerable amount of changes to the backyard. However, it didn’t take much time to complete, as the production members had all the logistics available.

The filming crew then moved to the neighborhood of Encino. The iconic bowling alley scene in the movie was filmed inside Encino Bowl, which is located at 15945 Ventura Boulevard, Encino. The production members had to book the whole place for a week or so, which was quite expensive as this place was pretty famous amongst locals, who enjoyed bowling.

Additional outdoor sequences of the movie were captured around various neighborhoods in Los Angeles, such as Van Nuys, Wilshire Boulevard, and Sylmar. Then finally, the filming crew moved to the city of Santa Clarita.

The ending sequence of the movie was captured near Six Flags Magic Mountain, which is located at 26101 Magic Mountain Parkway, Valencia. After all the major outdoor shots were captured, the crew returned to Los Angeles and filmed the remaining scenes inside a well-equipped studio.

The story of Encino Man follows the characters of Dave and his friend Stoney, who revive a caveman, from his deep sleep. At the very beginning of the film, the caveman appears to be frozen after he gets trapped inside a geological formation.
