Remember the funeral scene of the gang’s basketball coach Buzzer? It was filmed in the upmarket town of Southborough in Massachusetts at the Pilgrim Congregational Church. This institution was established almost three centuries ago in the year 1727. In order to get access and shoot in this heritage building, the production team had to separately pay or in other term donate $25,000.

Another donation that the production unit had to make was to film in the Woodward School in the town. Just to shoot a couple of scenes there, they had to give away $10,000.

It is a known fact that the posh town of Southborough happens to be one of the wealthiest and most affluent communities in all of Massachusetts. The town is famous for the 9/11 Memorial Field and the Breakneck Hill conservation land. Nevertheless, apart from Grown Ups, movies like Joy, a comedy-drama that stars actors like Bradley Cooper and Rober DeNiro, Brendon Fraser’s 1992 teen drama School Ties, and the interesting sports comedy movie Freedom Park were filmed here too.

Essex | Massachusetts, United States of America

The Amoskeag Lake in the movie is in reality the Chebacco Lake located in Essex County in eastern Massachusetts. This is one of the primary filming locations of the movie. A major portion of Grown Ups was shot in the lake house next to Chebacco lake that was rented by the production team. Chebacco lake is situated at the borders of the coastal town of Essex and the suburban town of Hamilton.

The famous Chebacco lake is actually owned by the state of Massachusetts. The lake happens to be an enormous 209-acre reservoir that is classified as a Great Pond. However, the good news is that the lake is open to the public for recreational purposes.

Other filming locations in the town of Essex include the Continental Grove, where two brand new basketball courts were built by the movie’s production unit. The production company paid a lump sum amount of $150,000 to the town’s general fund. After the filming of Grown Ups in the town, people from across the country started visiting. Which as a result pumped almost a million dollars into the local economy.

The small coastal town of Essex is situated 26 miles north of Boston. Essex is presently known for its shellfish industry but earlier it used to be home for building ships. One of the members of the local government, Ray Randall, claimed that the shooting of this film in the town of Essex was highly beneficial not only to the local government but also to the residents of the town.

A few other popular movies that were filmed here are the gripping crime drama, American Hustle, which stars extraordinary actors like Christian Bale, Casey Affleck’s Oscar-winning movie Manchester By The Sea, and the fantasy comedy Hocus Pocus.
