While the director was researching during the initial stages of production, he thought of shooting all exterior shots in Nevada.

But, after reviewing the production budget, Dunham had to change the filming location from Nevada to an affordable shooting location. The production members, on the other hand, waited for instructions from the filmmaker.

After a couple of weeks, the filming crew scouted the ideal filming locations in and around the state of Oregon. A number of potential shooting locations were selected in this state, after which the production members moved to the next state.

The remaining filming locations were scouted in and around the state of California. By and large, these shooting locations were mainly selected to capture the interior scenes. However, in the final phase of shooting, some outdoor shots were also filmed in the state of California.

The principal photography of Homeward Bound commenced in the first week of August 1991 and continued until the end of September of the same year. The production members took the majority of the time filming the outdoor scenes in Oregon.

Whereas the production members captured the interior scenes in California within a couple of weeks. The entire shooting schedule lasted for more than two months. The filming crew made sure to take care of the domestically trained animals which were used for shooting.

Other outdoor shots in Oregon were captured near Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and Deschutes National Forest. After these shots were taken, the production members moved to Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, Oregon. 

The sequence where Sassy goes over the waterfall was filmed near Sahalie Falls, Oregon. Whereas the scene where Sassy gets caught in the Rapids was shot near Benham Falls, Oregon. Additional outdoor scenes of the movie were filmed in and around beautiful locations in Oregon, after which the production members moved to the next shooting location.

California | USA

The remaining outdoor scenes of the film were captured in and around the city of San Francisco. The sequences depicting the family home in the movie were filmed inside a medium-sized house located between Frederick St and Clayton St, San Francisco.

After these shots were captured, the production members used a medium-sized house located in San Francisco and filmed the interior scenes.
