The story of Mackenna’s Gold is set in the western state of Colorado. However, the shooting of this movie actually took place in the southwestern state of Arizona and parts of Utah. The makers of Mackenna’s Gold mainly decided to cut the production cost. 

The lump-sum amount, which was saved by not filming in expensive locations in America, was later utilized to rent a renowned studio. The makers smartly used the same funds and booked a well-equipped studio in California to depict the breathtaking scenes of the Canyon.

The principal photography of Mackenna’s Gold commenced in 1967 and took several months to complete. It’s equally important to mention that apart from the outdoor sequences which were filmed in America, a couple of the other scenes were also filmed in England.

The second half of Mackenna’s Gold was filmed in and around the state of Utah. The sequences depicting the arid and harsh terrain near the Colorado Mountains were actually captured in several locations in this state.

The filming crew took special shooting permission from the owners of Kanab Movie Ranch and filmed the hideout sequences of the movie. This famous ranch is located at 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab.

Other major outdoor shots in Utah were captured near Monument Valley and Snow Canyon State Park at 1002 Snow Canyon Drive, Utah. 

Then finally, the production members captured the horse-chase sequence near Rogue River, Oregon, after which they moved to California. The remaining interior sequences of the movie were shot inside Columbia/Sunset Gower Studios, located at 1438 N. Gower St, Hollywood.

The basic premise of Mackenna’s Gold revolves around the character of Mackenna, a middle-aged American Sheriff, posted in Colorado. At the very beginning of the movie, the lead actor discovers a mysterious map leading to the treasure chest hidden by the Indians.

But as the story progresses further, the news about Mackenna’s discovery somehow gets leaked. Subsequently, a cunning outlaw abducts the male lead and later forces him to disclose the real location of the treasure chest. However, other characters who were also hunting for the same treasure later rescue Mackenna from the outlaw.
