In fact, when Emerald was writing the screenplay for this project, she decided to showcase authentic locations to the audience. So during the initial stage of pre-production, Fennell formed a special team and arrived in Los Angeles to scout for potential filming locations.

After searching around different places in the city, Fennell and her team finally identified a number of locations, which matched the overall look that the director wanted. Subsequently, Fennell gathered the production members and asked them to commence shooting.

The principal photography began in the last week of March 2019 and continued for 4-6 weeks. The shooting schedule was pretty short. Mainly because the production members only had to shoot around a handful of places, which were located in the same city.

The production members used a local diner, situated at 2026 East St, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, to depict the “Make Me Coffee” Shop in the movie.

But, before the production members could capture the interior scenes, a considerable amount of changes had to be made. The director asked the production members to turn around a certain part of the store, which was going to be used for shooting. After the necessary changes were made the shots of Cassandra’s Coffee Shop were captured.

Other pivotal sequences in Los Angeles were filmed near Beverly Boulevard. Such as the sequence where we see Cassie and her friend Madison meeting for the first time, was filmed inside Jar Restaurant. This upscale eatery is located at 8225 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles. Additionally, the production members also visited a bunch of lively nightclubs in Los Angeles to film some pivotal moments. 

Blue Star Restaurant and Beer Garden located at 2200 East 15th St, was used to capture the exterior scene of the famous nightclub shown in the movie. In fact, the sequences where Ryan confronts Paul and Cassie were also filmed in the same location.

Toward the end of the shooting process, the production members also traveled to Altadena. A couple of important sequences were filmed near 2314 Lake Avenue and 2300 North Marengo Ave.

After all the outdoor scenes were filmed, the production members returned to the city of Los Angeles and used a well-equipped studio to capture the interior sequences.
