The story of Rat Race is set in the state of Nevada. To be more specific, the majority of the events depicted in this movie take place in and around the city of Las Vegas. But, apart from a few sequences, which were filmed on location, the majority of the shooting was done elsewhere.
The director wasn’t particularly short on production budget, however, he still wanted to capture a couple of outdoor scenes of this movie in Canada. So during the initial stages of production, Zucker and his team moved to Canada and scouted through a number of potential filming locations.
After the shooting locations in Canada were finalized by the director, he returned to the state of California along with his team. The production members then visited a number of picturesque shooting locations in California and selected them.
Finally, the team arrived in the state of Nevada and selected the shooting spots in Las Vegas. Zucker checked the filming location list for the second time and then instructed his crew to begin the filming process.
The principal photography of Rat Race commenced in the second week of August 2000 and continued for 3 months or so. The production members had to cover a number of shooting locations in and outside of America, but everything was completed within the estimated timeline.
The filming schedule remained unchanged till the final day of shooting. The last phase of shooting began in the second week of October 2000 and was completed by the first week of November of the same year.

But before filming these interior scenes, a number of cameras were strategically placed inside the casino to capture the opening scene from different angles. Other important sequences of the movie were captured inside Venetian Hotel, which is located at 3355 Las Vegas Blvd South.

The second phase of the shooting took place in and around the state of California. A number of outdoor scenes were captured in Santa Clarita, California. The truck stop and Fatburger scenes of the movie were shot in Palmdale, California.
Additional outdoor sequences of the movie were also captured in and around the city of Las Vegas and Rosamund. After these scenes were filmed, the production members moved to Canada.
As per reports, the final stage of shooting was done in the province of Alberta, Canada, after which the production members returned to America and began working on the promotion of the movie.
