Francis Lawrence primarily wanted to shoot Slumberland entirely in Canada. Thus, after the pre-production stage, the crew started looking for idyllic filming locations across different parts of Canada. Soon, a number of potential filming spots in Ontario were selected, Lawrence, of course later revisited the sites and finalized some.

So, after the locations in Ontario were finalized, the principal photography began in the first week of November 2020. The shooting was completed within 3 months, however for a number of reasons the post-production was delayed, causing the film to release in December 2022. Thankfully, no major issues arose while capturing the jaw-dropping sequences in Canada and the filming process went on smoothly, for the most part. Hamilton, Ontario | Canada

The first quarter of the movie, including the opening sequence, where we are acquainted with the adorable character of Nemo, was filmed in the city of Hamilton. The production members arrived at this Canadian port city, to capture the outdoor shots of Nemo’s family home. A medium-sized house located near the city’s lakefront was used by the crew to portray the scenes where the female lead is shown visiting her uncle’s home. Filming permissions from the owner of the property were acquired and the production member also revamped the overall appearance of the house. 

Other pivotal sequences featured the Mohawk College, centrally located in the bustling city of Hamilton, which was used to portray the scenes of Nemo’s school. The production crew also had to take special filming permission from the administrative body of the college, to capture the interior sequences of the classroom and the hallway. The majority of the outdoor scenes in Hamilton were captured within a month or so, after which the members moved to the next filming location.

Toronto, Ontario | Canada

Almost all the major events in the film take place in Nemo’s dream. So in order to recreate those sequences, the production members used a well-equipped studio in Toronto. The Pinewood Toronto Studios located at Port Lands is where the majority of the interior sequences were captured. The scenes of the dreamland shown in the movie too were shot here. The filming crew constructed a make-believe set of the Lighthouse inside the same studio and later captured exterior shots of it. Francis also used several digital photography methods such as CGI and VFX to render the remaining sequences.

Other pivotal outdoor sequences in Toronto, featured the Royal York Hotel in the final sequence of the movie. After the completion of the entire filming process, the crew returned to America and prepared to work on post-production.

As mentioned earlier, the story of Slumberland revolves around the adorable character of Nemo, a young American teenage girl who had recently lost her father. At the beginning of the film, the female lead is shown to be completely broken, after the demise of her loving father. Subsequently, her loving aunt and uncle later arrive to take her away, in an attempt to deviate her mind. But everything seemed bleak and meaningless for Nemo, as she couldn’t come to grips with the loss. 

Later in the film, Nemo surprisingly ends up in an enchanted dreamland after dozing off and meets the character of Flip, a funny and eccentric outlaw.
