Where Was The Lobster Filmed? Let’s Know This Black Comedy Movie Closely!

The filming of The Lobster wasn’t done in America, which, weirdly enough, many of us would’ve guessed from the trailer. The actual shooting of this movie was done in a beautiful place located far, far away from the North American continent.

However, before Yorgos selected the filming location for this project, he and Efthimis Filippou were busy writing the screenplay for The Lobster. Since Yorgos wanted to depict an unconventional story in his film, he didn’t shy away from adding peculiar elements to the script.

Other incredible films directed by Yorgos, such as Poor Things, Kinetta, and Dogtooth, which were released prior to this project, also possessed out-of-the-box elements too. So, it wasn’t the first time Yorgos, where he was experimenting with an unorthodox storyline and filming technique.

After the director finished writing the screenplay, he and his team headed straight to the Republic of Ireland. A number of shooting locations were scouted by the production members in Ireland. 

Soon, Yorgos went and checked each scouted location in Ireland, and that’s when he decided to shoot all sequences of The Lobster in and around the Republic of Ireland. The principal photography commenced in the last week of March 2014 and continued for two and a half months.

During the shooting process, the majority of the outdoor shots were filmed in and around the city of Dublin. Whereas some minor scenes were captured near County Kerry and County Cork. The shooting process of The Lobster ended by the final week of May 2014.

After the shooting was finished, the filming crew returned to America and began working on the promotion of this unconventional film.

Republic Of Ireland

The opening scene of the film, where we see the character of David outside his apartment located in “The City,” was actually filmed in Dublin. The production members used a high-rise building located in the downtown area of Dublin to capture the exterior shots of David’s apartment.

Other important scenes in Dublin were filmed inside a famous eatery. The iconic restaurant scene in the movie was actually filmed inside Joel’s Restaurant, located at Nass Rd, near Newlands Cross, Dublin.

Additional outdoor scenes of the movie were filmed near Grand Canal Dock. The scene where we see the lead actor strolling down the park was captured near Chimney Park Playground, located at Hibernian Rd, Grand Canal Dock.

After these scenes were shot, the production members moved to the next filming location. The sequences from the second half of the film were captured in County Cork. The production members took special shooting permission from a luxurious hotel to shoot some pivotal scenes.

The sequence where the lead character gets sent to a hotel to find the love of his life was filmed inside The Eccles Hotel, located at Glengarriff Harbour, County Cork. 

In the ending scene of the film, where we see the character of David being banished from “The City” and sent into “The Woods,” were captured near Dromore Woods, Coillte Teoranta.

After all the outdoor scenes of The Lobster were captured, the production crew wrapped the endite filming process.

The story of The Lobster revolves around the character of David, a middle-aged man living all alone in a spacious apartment. At the very beginning of the movie, the male lead appears to be lonely and sad.

As the story progresses further, David decides to join a counseling group to share his feelings and talk about his deteriorating mental health. Soon, the group leader asks David and the other members of the group to spend 45 days in a hotel and try to find the love of their lives.
