The American western drama flick, The Tall Men released in 1955, was primarily inspired by Heck Allen’s novel, published a couple of years prior to the film. Sydney Boehm and Frank Nugent developed the screenplay further to make it more captivating for the cinema audience.

The basic premise of The Tall Men is centered around the characters of Col Ben and Clint Allison, who join a local business after serving their due time in the Confederate army. The plot thickens when the Allison brothers are challenged by feared outlaws, while on their way to a village in Montana.

The makers of The Tall Men were not satisfied with the overall commercial performance of the film. This crime-action film only managed to barely surpass the production budget of $3.5 million, at the box office. However, western movie lovers, on the other hand, reviewed the film positively and appreciated the performances of the actors.

The story of The Tall Men is set in Texas, however, the filming didn’t take place on location. Right from the initial stage of pre-production, the makers decided to shoot the film in parts of Mexico and California.

Thus after the cast members were auditioned and selected, the director asked the production members to scout for ideal filming locations in Mexico and California. As the director wanted to recreate the arid and rough backdrop of Texas, he thought of shooting the majority of the sequences in and around the Mexican state of Durango.

After the list of potential shooting locations were submitted to Raoul, the director selected a few locations from the list and decided to only shoot a couple of sequences in California. Walsh then instructed the crew to commence shooting.

The principal photography began in the first week of April 1955 and continued till the second week of June. Filming lasted for 8-10 weeks, during which the production members worked diligently and stayed on top of the filming dates, for the most part.

However, while shooting a few outdoor sequences near the state of  Durango, the production members ran into a major issue with the Mexican authorities. Now, without any delay, let’s discuss where was The Tall Men filmed in-depth.

Zacatecas, Mexico

The opening sequence of the film, where we see the lead actors returning from the confederate army base, was filmed around the city of Zacatecas. This major Mexican city is located in the central region of the country and has rich Silver ore.

Apart from the rocky terrain, this city also hosts a number of historical churches and colonial buildings. So the sequences where the Allison brothers are shown to take refuge, after returning from the army base, were actually filmed inside one of the historical churches.

Special shooting permissions had to be acquired before filming the interior sequences, inside the premise of the church. Shooting in Zacatecas lasted for several weeks after which the production members moved to the next filming location in Mexico.

Durango, Mexico

The majority of the sequences depicting the scenes of Texas in the movie were filmed in and around the city of Durango. While filming one of the outdoor sequences near the outskirts of the city, the production members ran into a major problem with the Mexican authorities.

This incident forced the production members to halt shooting for a number of weeks. But, thankfully after mitigating the issue with the Mexican government, the filming resumed again.

The famous stampede sequence of the movie was then captured near Los Organes Valley, Durango. Additional sequences of the movie were then captured in other parts of Durango. The production members then finally returned back to America and filmed the remaining sequences of the movie in Idaho and California.
