The makers of The Tall T wanted to shoot the film in Mexico, during the initial stages of pre-production. But after the production members reviewed the shooting budget, they resorted to filming the movie in America. 

Thus, after this significant decision was made, the creative heads arranged a special team and tasked them to scout for ideal filming locations in California. Soon, a number of potential shooting spots were scouted. Budd Boetticher, the director of the film, then selected a few locations in California and instructed the members to start preparing for shooting.

Important to mention that, before the filming began, Boetticher also asked the actors to join a horse riding class, which was arranged by the production members. Then finally, the principal photography began in the summer of 1956 and continued for 8 weeks. The majority of the shooting took place in and around Alabama Hills and Lone Pine.

The crew managed to remain on top of the filming dates, without delaying the filming schedule. All necessary logistics required for filming were arranged in advance as well. The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the lead actor feeding the cattle of a ranch, was actually filmed in Alabama Hills. This sparsely populated area was named after CSS Alabama and stands as an integral part of Inyo County. 

The production members took special filming permissions from the owners of a local farm before filming the interior sequences of the stables, and pen shown in the film.

The sequences depicting the hideout of the outlaws in the movie were also captured around the same area in Alabama Hills. The production members had to construct the make-believe hideouts from the ground up. A considerable amount of time was spent in putting up the tents and recreating the surroundings. Filming in Alabama Hills lasted for 3 weeks or so, after which the production moved to the next filming location in California.

Lone Pine, California | USA

Another sparsely populated area, located in Inyo County was used to shoot the remainder of the film. The final sequence of the movie, where we see the lead actor, engaging in a firefight with the outlaws was filmed here. 

Dummy firearms and ammunition were arranged by the team in advance, which was used to film this intense action sequence. Interestingly a trained horse was also brought in set by the production members, which was later used to capture the sequence of the horse chase. Filming in Lone Pine lasted for 4 weeks in total, the crew then captured the remaining interior sequences inside a renowned studio.
