The story of the pilot season of True Detective is set in the southern state of Louisiana. Surprisingly enough, the filming of True Detective Season 1 was also done in and around the same state.

Since Nic was working with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for the first time, he arranged a special meeting with these Hollywood A-listers. Apart from discussing the overall strategy for this series, Pizzolatto also conferred about the filming locations with the lead actors.

Everyone seemed to agree with the idea of shooting Season 1 of True Detective in and around the state of Louisiana. Nic decided to consider the advice of his team members and then instructed his crew to scout for filming locations in Louisiana.

After a couple of weeks, the production members looked for ideal shooting spots in Louisiana and then reported to Nic. Pizzolatto reviewed the filming locations and evaluated the production budget, and then asked the crew to start filming.

The principal photography of True Detective commenced in the second week of January 2013 and continued till the final week of June, of the same year. As per reports, approximately 5 to 6 minutes of the film was shot per day.

Mainly because the majority of the time was spent by the production members in building different set pieces, like the Louisiana State Investigation Office, Scorched Chapel, Joel Theriot’s tent revival, etc.

The majority of the filming was done in and around the city of New Orleans. While some pivotal sequences from season 1 of True Detective were also captured near Fisherman’s Wharf and Venetian Isle.

The entire filming process of True Detective Season 1 lasted for about 5 months or so. During this time, the production members didn’t face any major issues. The only challenge they faced while shooting in the southern state of Louisiana was the humid climate.

The uncomfortable weather restricted the crew from extensively filming in Louisiana within a shorter span of time. But other than that, there were no other issues which kept the crew from filming. The required permissions and logistics were arranged in advance to avoid any delay.

The opening scene from True Detective Season 1 was filmed near Almonaster Blvd, New Orleans. This busy 6-lane road is located on the eastern side of New Orleans. Apart from the opening scene, the production members also filmed the sequences of the Palace Truck Stop & Casino around the same location.

Other important scenes from True Detective Season 1 were captured near Venetian Isle. This quaint neighborhood is located on western shore of Chef Menteur Pass. Since Venetian Isle is secluded from the developed portion of New Orleans, Nic thought it would be best to shoot the sequences of the murder around this sparsely populated place.

Additional outdoor scenes from the final episode of the show were captured near Fisherman’s Wharf. After these scenes were shot, the entire shooting process ended in Louisiana.

The remaining interior shots of True Detective were then captured inside a famous studio in California.
