Director Guillermo del Toro, in this film, presents the story of a talented writer, who travels to a secluded and spooky manor house in England. Crimson Peak, was an out and out success! Commercially it performed well, gathering over $70 million in total box office collection. Plot Of Crimson Peak | What’s It About

Crimson Peak, begins in late 19th century New York, where we are introduced to the character of Edith Cushing, mourning for her mother’s untimely death. Soon after, the apparition of Edith’s mother appears, to warn her daughter about Crimson Peak.

Two decades later, Edith is shown to pursue the literary path of becoming an author. Later she makes acquaintance with an English lord, Sir Thomas Sharpe. Who came to New York, looking for a suitable investor for his ingenious invention. After a while Edith and Thomas begin to get invested in each other, romantically. Without paying any heed to Mr. Cushing’s objections!

Thereafter, Thomas is shown to marry Edith, and take her back to his mansion, Allerdale Hall, in England, along with his sister Lucille. With each passing day, the situation for Edith gets worse, as the nightmares and visions torment her psyche. 

In order to divert her mind, the female lead starts to explore the hidden chambers of the mansion. Soon she comes across a number of artifacts that turns her suspicion of the house being haunted, into reality!

Lucille comes to know about her findings, and tries to kill Edith by pushing her. After sustaining minor injuries, Edith fights back and escapes the manor house with the help of Thomas. The credits roll as the ghost of Lucille remains trapped in the mansion, waiting for the salvation of her cursed soul!

Where Was Crimson Peak Filmed? Let’s Know This Horror Mystery Film Closely!!

Director Guillermo del Toro, along with cinematographer Dan Laustsen, decided to shoot at a different location than what is shown in the film Crimson Peak. Soon after consulting with other production unit heads, del Toro sent his filming crew to scout for a perfect location that could portray the early 20th century setting of England.

Finally, Canada came out on top, as the perfect place for shooting, Crimson Peak. And thus the lush province of Ontario was selected as the final filming spot! Majority of the filming took place in and around the cities and counties of Ontario. The principal photography for the movie featuring Tom Hiddleston, began in February 2014 and was completed in 3 months!

Clarington, Ontario | Canada

The first location that the production unit reached, was the Municipality of Clarington. Which is located in the Durham region of Ontario. The opening scene of the film, where Edith is shown mourning for her mother inside a big mansion, was filmed here. The exterior shots of a Victorian style house in Kendall were taken. The crew had to change the appearance of the house a little, to match it with the look that director del Toro wanted in the film.

Hamilton, Ontario | Canada

Subsequently, the production unit moved to the city of Hamilton, to shoot the sequences of Thomas’ family home in England. The Dundurn Castle, located just outside of the city, was used to shoot the scenes that portrayed the “Allerdale Hall” in the film. The filming crew brought in special smoke and lighting equipment to capture the outdoor scenes of the scary looking mansion. Meanwhile you can also watch Locke & Key and Chucky which were also filmed here.

A few other pivotal scenes were filmed in Scottish Rite. This special place in Hamilton, located at 4 Queen St South, is often rented for special occasions and events. Director Toro booked the whole venue, for over two weeks!

Toronto, Ontario | Canada

Finally the filming crew reached its final filming location in Toronto. Most of the interior scenes of the Allerdale Hall and Edith’s family home were filmed in Pinewood Toronto Studios. Located in the Port Lands area of Toronto, this studio is often used by a number of renowned filmmakers!
