Dazed and Confused is one of the first films that Richard Linklater made during the early stage of his career. You’d be surprised to know that, apart from directing this movie, Richard also wrote the screenplay for this project.

However, while the director was choosing the ideal filming locations for Dazed and Confused, he was pretty confused (no pun intended). The fact that Richard didn’t have a high production budget to work with definitely limited his choices.

So, during the initial stages of production, the director and his team looked for potential filming locations in and around North Carolina and California. However, Linklater didn’t like the overall backdrop of the locations and thus decided to look for some other shooting sites later.

After a couple of weeks, the director finally decided to shoot the entire film in and around the state of Texas. As soon as the final filming locations in Austin were selected, Robert asked the crew to prepare for the shooting process.

The principal photography of Dazed and Confused commenced in the second week of July 1992 and continued until the final week of August, of the same year. During this time, the majority of the scenes were filmed in and around the city of Austin.

While some important scenes of the movie were also filmed in Georgetown, Texas, the entire shooting process lasted for a little over a month’s time. The production members were able to complete the filming process within the estimated timeline.

Before the shooting process started, the production members had to take special permission from the administrative board of a public school in Texas. After all the shooting permits were acquired by the crew, they started the first phase of shooting.

The opening sequence of Dazed and Confused, where we see the graduating students of Lee High School for the first time, was filmed in the city of Austin. The production members filmed all sequences of Robert Lee School inside Bedichek Middle School, located at 6800 Bill Hughes Rd, Austin, Texas.

But, before filming the scenes inside Bedichek school, the production members had to make a couple of changes. The auditorium and the classrooms were turned around by the crew. In fact, the exterior structure of the school was repainted by the production members as well.

The sequences of the Williams Middle School were filmed in a different school. The production members captured the sequences of Williams Middle School inside Everette L. Williams Elementary School, located at 507 East University Avenue, Georgetown.

A couple of other iconic scenes, such as the burger shop scene and the sequences of the party, were also filmed in Texas. The production members captured some outdoor scenes near Toney Burger Center and West Enfield Park.

The scenes depicting Kevin Pickford’s house were filmed inside a small house located at 5800 Coventry Lane, Austin. Additional footage was captured in and around the city of Austin, and by the final week of August 1992, the shooting process of Dazed and Confused ended.
